Authorities have partially reopened the Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road, the sole route connecting Tusheti with the rest of Georgia, following seasonal closure. Travel has resumed for high-clearance vehicles only on the section between Lechura and Omalo, covering kilometre markers 12 to 72.
The first stretch of the road, from Pshaveli to Lechura (km 1 to km 11), remains open without restriction to all vehicle types. Beyond Lechura, however, ordinary cars and minivans are still prohibited; only 4x4s and other high-clearance vehicles may proceed toward Omalo.
The road crosses the Abano Pass and is known for steep, gravel sections and dangerous gradients. It typically operates only through summer and early autumn before winter conditions force a full closure. Authorities have not yet announced a date for the complete seasonal shutdown and warned that deteriorating weather could close the pass at any time without notice.
What it means for travellers
Anyone heading toward Tusheti or Omalo must use a 4×4 or other high-clearance vehicle once past Lechura; standard cars are not permitted on this section. Travellers should confirm current road conditions with a local driver or tour operator before departure, as the Abano Pass can close rapidly once weather worsens.
