The Roads Department of Georgia has closed the Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road to all vehicles between km22 and km72 due to heavy snowfall and black ice. The closure took effect on 4 October 2026.
This section includes the Abano Pass, the main route connecting lowland Georgia to the remote highland region of Tusheti. The road between km1 and km22, near the village of Pshaveli, remains open to traffic.
The Abano Pass is one of the highest and most difficult mountain roads in Georgia, typically closed from late autumn until early summer because of snow and seasonal weather conditions. This early-season closure suggests winter conditions have arrived ahead of schedule.
What it means for travellers
Travellers planning trips to Tusheti, including Omalo and surrounding villages, should expect no vehicle access beyond km22 until conditions improve. Those currently in Tusheti should check with local operators about alternative arrangements. Visitors should monitor official updates before attempting the route and avoid travel on this road until the restriction is lifted.
