Travellers heading from Tbilisi or other Caucasus hubs to East Africa typically connect through Istanbul, Doha or Dubai before landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) — and many treat Nairobi as little more than a changeover point. That overlooks a city that ranks among sub-Saharan Africa’s most dynamic, combining finance, technology and conservation with enough attractions to fill a day or two before or after a bush itinerary.
The standout draw is Nairobi National Park, the only national park in the world bordering a capital city. A 15-minute drive from downtown leads into open savannah covering 117 km², home to more than 100 mammal species — including one of Kenya’s few black rhino populations — plus lions, buffalo, giraffe and over 400 bird species. Next door, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust runs its well-known elephant orphan rehabilitation programme, with public visits held daily between 11:00 and 12:00, including feeding sessions with young orphans.
Beyond wildlife, Nairobi’s dining scene has expanded rapidly, with Kenyan, Ethiopian, Japanese and pan-African restaurants concentrated in Westlands and the leafy Karen suburb. Karen is also home to the Karen Blixen Museum, set in the farmhouse that inspired “Out of Africa.” As Nikos Pocock, head guide and co-founder of Africa Calling Safaris, put it: guests who skip Nairobi miss the backstory that gives field conservation work its meaning.
For logistics, Karen and Langata offer quieter accommodation close to both the park and the airport; transfers should be booked ahead given unpredictable Nairobi traffic. Daylight walking in central business districts is generally safe, though taxis or ride-hailing apps are recommended after dark. A direct transfer from JKIA can have visitors on a game drive within 30 minutes of landing, and a 45-minute flight connects the Masai Mara to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport for those building the city into either end of their trip.
