The Kartli plain unrolls west of Tbilisi toward Gori, Kaspi and the Ateni valley, a stretch of flat vineyard land and river gorges where Chinuri and Goruli Mtsvane vines have grown for centuries alongside a living qvevri and sparkling wine tradition. This is one of Georgia’s oldest wine-producing corners, close enough to the capital for a day trip yet distinct in grape variety and winemaking style from Kakheti further east.
The following list was compiled by the GTour desk from the national register of licensed wine-tourism places in Shida Kartli. Entries were selected for location within the region, an established and verifiable presence (address, registration, or website), and what each offers a visitor arriving to taste or tour. No winery has paid for inclusion and no ratings are claimed; this is a guide to what exists, not a ranking of quality.
1. AGIDELA
Agidela Winery sits in Shida Kartli and was founded in 2020 by the professional winemaking couple Lasha Chkuaseli and Eli Tsiskar. It suits visitors interested in a relatively young, hands-on operation run directly by its founders.
2. Chateau Ateni
Chateau Ateni is located in the heart of Kartli, in the village of Ateni in the Gori district, a valley long associated with the Chinuri grape. It is a fitting stop for travellers combining wine tasting with the historic sites of the Ateni gorge.
3. Merebashvili Estate
Merebashvili Estate is a family-run hotel and winery located in the historic town of Kaspi, making it one of the few entries on this list offering overnight stays alongside wine. It suits visitors who want to pair a winery visit with a stay in the Kaspi area rather than a same-day return to Tbilisi.
4. Nika Vacheishvili's Wine Cellar
This wine cellar and hotel is located in Shida Kartli close to Gori, near Ateni’s Sioni church and about a ten-minute walk from the city. It combines accommodation with winemaking, suiting travellers who want to base themselves near Gori while exploring the Ateni valley.
5. Tezi Winery
Tezi Winery built its wine cellar in 2022 in the village of Tezi, in Kaspi municipality. As a newer addition to the Kartli wine map, it suits visitors curious about recently established producers in the Kaspi area.
6. Uplistsikhe Estate
Uplistsikhe Estate is a winery founded in 2019 on Zedavela hill in the heart of Kartli, beside the historic cave city of Uplistsikhe. It is a natural pairing for visitors already planning to see the cave city, offering a wine stop within reach of one of the region’s major archaeological sites.
7. Wine Artisans
Wine Artisans is a natural winery near Gori in the village of Tsedisi, run by Andro Barnovi, known locally as the “wine cook.” It suits visitors with an interest in natural winemaking methods close to Gori.
8. Dvalebi's Marani
Dvalebi’s Marani is a family-owned organic vineyard in Shida Kartli’s District Towers area, growing the red Shavkapito and white Chinuri varieties traditional to the region. It suits visitors interested in organic production and the indigenous Kartli grape varieties in one stop.
9. Broladze's Marani
Broladze’s Marani is located in the village of Mefis Kalaki in Shida Kartli and is listed in the national tourism register with map and contact details available. It suits travellers mapping out a self-guided route through the smaller villages of the Kartli wine country.
How to use this list
Treat this as a starting point rather than a fixed itinerary: confirm opening arrangements and visiting conditions directly with each winery before travelling, since the register records location and licensing rather than day-to-day visitor services. Several entries, including Merebashvili Estate and Nika Vacheishvili’s Wine Cellar, offer accommodation and can anchor a longer stay in the Gori or Kaspi area, while others such as Chateau Ateni and Uplistsikhe Estate sit close to well-known historic sites and suit a combined day trip from Tbilisi.
