The Pshaveli-Abano-Omalo road, the only land route into Tusheti, has partially reopened following its seasonal closure. Authorities confirmed that traffic has resumed on the stretch between Lechura and Omalo, from kilometre 12 to kilometre 72, but only for high-clearance 4×4 vehicles.
The first section of the road, from Pshaveli to Lechura (kilometre 1 to 11), remains open to all vehicle types without restriction. Beyond Lechura, ordinary cars and minivans remain banned; only 4x4s or similarly capable vehicles may continue toward Omalo. The route crosses the Abano Pass, known for steep, gravel sections and dangerous gradients, and typically operates only through summer and early autumn before winter conditions force a full closure.
No final closure date for the season has been announced. Authorities warn that the pass can shut without prior notice if weather conditions deteriorate.
What it means for travellers
Travellers heading to Tusheti or Omalo must use a 4×4 or other high-clearance vehicle beyond Lechura, as standard cars are prohibited on that stretch. Before setting out, check current road conditions with a local driver or tour operator, since the Abano Pass can close rapidly once weather worsens.
