The Georgian Military Highway climbs out of Tbilisi through Mtskheta-Mtianeti toward the Russian border, and two stops dominate any traveller’s plan: Gudauri, the country’s best-known ski resort, and Stepantsminda (still widely called Kazbegi), the small town that sits beneath Mount Kazbek. Gudauri sprawls along the road at altitude with its lift system built into the hillside, while Stepantsminda lies further north in the valley, within sight of Gergeti Trinity Church and the Kazbek massif. Both are reachable on the same route, and both are covered in more detail in our guides at /tbilisi-to-kazbegi/, /gudauri-ski-season-guide/ and, for conditions on the pass, /road-status/.
This list was put together by the GTour desk from the national tourism register of licensed places. Selection was based on location along the Georgian Military Highway, an established presence in Gudauri or Stepantsminda, and what each property offers a traveller passing through or basing themselves in the area. No payment was involved in inclusion, and no ratings or rankings are claimed beyond the order presented.
1. Marco Polo Hotel Gudauri
Marco Polo Hotel Gudauri sits in the Gudauri ski resort on the Georgian Military Highway and is described in the register as one of the resort’s most renowned and historic hotels, having opened in 1988. It suits travellers who want a long-established address in Gudauri with a direct link to the resort’s skiing history.
2. Best Western Gudauri
Best Western Gudauri is located in daba Gudauri, the resort village on the Georgian Military Highway above Stepantsminda. As part of the international Best Western network, it offers visitors a familiar hotel brand as a base for the Gudauri ski season or a stop on the road north.
3. Roshe Gudauri
Roshe Gudauri is set at Kumlistsikhe within the Gudauri resort area and is listed as a premium 33-room mountain hotel with views of the Caucasus Mountains. It suits visitors looking for a sizeable, purpose-built mountain property within the ski area.
4. Gudauri Lodge
Gudauri Lodge is registered at 1st Lift 1, placing it by the resort’s first ski lift. The address makes it a practical choice for skiers and snowboarders who want to be close to the lift system during the Gudauri season.
5. Gudauri Hills Apart Hotel
Gudauri Hills Apart Hotel is located in Gudauri, Kazbegi District, with the register noting its proximity to the first ski lift. Its apart-hotel format suits travellers who prefer self-contained units within walking distance of the slopes.
6. Gudauri Hills Residence
Gudauri Hills Residence shares the same Gudauri, Kazbegi District address as its sister property and is likewise close to the first ski lift. The residence format is aimed at visitors wanting longer stays or more space than a standard hotel room.
7. Gudauri Inn

10. ROOMS Kazbegi
ROOMS Kazbegi is located at V. Gorgasali Street 1 in Stepantsminda, in Georgia’s Kazbegi region, and the register describes it as “all about the view.” It suits visitors who prioritise outlook over Mount Kazbek and the surrounding valley during their stay.
How to use this list
Use this list alongside the practical guides linked above: check the Tbilisi-to-Kazbegi route and current pass conditions before travelling, since the Georgian Military Highway can be affected by weather, and consult the Gudauri ski season guide if the trip is built around skiing rather than a stop in Stepantsminda. The entries are grouped loosely by location along the highway so travellers can match a property to whether they are basing themselves in the ski resort or in the town below Kazbek.
Quick answers
What is the difference between Kazbegi and Stepantsminda? Stepantsminda is the official name of the town below Mount Kazbek; Kazbegi is the older name still widely used for the same place.
Is Gudauri only a ski destination? It is best known as Georgia’s leading ski resort, but it also sits directly on the Georgian Military Highway and is used as a stop by travellers heading further north toward Kazbegi.
How can I check if the road to Gudauri or Kazbegi is open? Conditions on the Georgian Military Highway can be checked at /road-status/, since the pass is subject to winter closures.
Were these hotels paid to appear on this list? No. They were selected by the GTour desk from the national tourism register based on location, established presence and what they offer a traveller; no payment was involved and no ratings are claimed.
