Traffic for high-clearance vehicles has resumed on the Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road between Lechuri and Omalo, covering the stretch from the 12th to the 72nd kilometre. All other vehicle types remain barred from this section.
The first part of the route, from Pshaveli to Lechuri (km 1 to km 11), remains open to all vehicle types without restriction. The Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road, which crosses the Abano Pass, is the only road connecting Tusheti to the rest of Georgia and is known for steep, loose-gravel sections and sharp drops. It is typically passable only in summer and early autumn, before winter conditions force its closure.
Authorities have not announced a date for full closure, noting that the pass can shut again quickly if weather conditions deteriorate.
What it means for travellers
Anyone heading to Tusheti or Omalo must use a 4×4 or other high-clearance vehicle for the Lechuri–Omalo stretch; regular cars and minivans are prohibited beyond Lechuri. Travellers are advised to confirm current road conditions with a local driver or tour operator before departure, as the Abano Pass can close on short notice once weather turns.
