Few sounds define East Africa’s wetlands as clearly as the piercing, two-note cry of the African fish eagle. Although it is the national bird of Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Sudan, the raptor is arguably Kenya’s most recognisable species, its call carrying across still water from the Rift Valley to Lake Victoria. For travellers arriving from the Caucasus or Europe, typically via Istanbul, Doha or Addis Ababa to Nairobi, a dawn encounter with the bird often becomes the defining memory of a Kenyan trip, long before the first lion sighting.

The eagle hunts from tall perches overlooking water, scanning for fish near the surface before gliding down in a controlled arc and seizing prey with its talons in a strike lasting under a second, staying almost entirely dry. Roughly one in four attempts succeeds, but repeated tries throughout the day cover its energy needs. It supplements fishing by stealing catches from other birds and occasionally taking waterbirds, small mammals or carrion. Lake Naivasha alone hosts more than 200 breeding pairs, one of the densest concentrations anywhere in East Africa.

Pairs mate for life and reuse the same nest for decades, with structures eventually reaching 1.5 metres across. Both birds maintain the nest, raise chicks and perform a daily duet call, heads thrown back, to reinforce their bond and territory. Beyond Naivasha, reliable viewing spots include Lake Baringo, the Kenyan shore of Lake Victoria, the Tana River delta, and the Mara and Musiara rivers inside the Masai Mara, where resident pairs appear on most game drives.
