Kakheti in winter: warm cellars, a fireplace dinner at a wine estate, and [Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/)'s walls quiet under snow, over two unhurried days from [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/).

The route

[Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)[Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/)[Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/)

Why this tour

- —Low season in wine country: cellars are quiet and owners have time to talk you through the tasting

- —One night at a family-run wine estate near [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/), dinner by the fireplace

- —[Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/)'s 18th-century fortress wall and the Alazani valley view, often under snow December to February

- —Bodbe Convent and the tomb of St Nino without the summer bus groups

- —[Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/)'s royal palace and the old plane tree, Kakheti's regional base, seen at its own pace

- —Private car and driver throughout, no fixed group schedule to work around

Itinerary

Day 1Morning pickup in [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/), drive east into Kakheti (about two hours). Stop at Alaverdi Monastery, then on to [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/) for a cellar tasting and a look at the old plane tree in the town centre. Evening at a family-run wine estate near Telavi, dinner by the fireplace.

Day 2Morning in [Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/), walking the restored fortress wall above the Alazani valley. Visit Bodbe Convent and the tomb of St Nino, with time for a second cellar stop on the way back, then drive to [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/), arriving by early evening.

Good to know

- · The [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)–[Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/) road is paved and generally kept clear, but ice and occasional snow are possible December through February, which can add time to the drive

- · Bring layers: cellars and the estate dining room are heated, but monastery courtyards and [Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/)'s cobbled streets are cold and can be icy underfoot

- · Alaverdi and Bodbe are working religious sites; modest dress is required and women need a head covering (bring one or borrow one at the gate)

- · Walking is easy throughout, no hiking, but good closed shoes help on wet stone

- · Daylight is short in winter (sunset around 17:00–17:30), so the schedule is built around that rather than summer hours

- · Room heating and hot water at the wine estate should be confirmed at booking, as standards vary between small family properties

Questions

**Is Kakheti worth visiting in winter, or is everything closed?**
Cellars stay open year-round and tastings are often more relaxed than in high season. Some smaller guesthouses reduce hours, which is why we check specifics at booking.

**What is the wine estate like?**
A family-run property near [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/) with heated rooms and a fireplace dining room, not a large hotel. Exact amenities are confirmed when we book your dates.

**Can we extend with a day in Tbilisi before or after?**
Yes, we can add a [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) day or an airport transfer on either end; let us know when you enquire.

**What happens if snow closes a mountain pass or road?**
The [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)–Kakheti route is a main paved road and is rarely closed, though drive times can lengthen in bad weather. We check road status before departure and adjust the order of stops if needed.

Prices are per person for two travelling together, in euros; solo travellers and larger groups are quoted on request. Every departure is private and adjusted to you. Hotels, wineries and restaurants on our routes are [verified by GTour](/verified/).
