Four days chasing winter light: dawn at Gergeti Trinity below Kazbek, then the snow-covered towers of [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) under Ushba and Tetnuldi.

The route

[Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)[Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/)[Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/)

Why this tour

- —Two signature winter subjects in one trip: Gergeti Trinity Church at dawn and the medieval towers of [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) under fresh snow

- —Timed for alpenglow and blue hour, not tourist-bus hours

- —4×4 vehicle included for the Georgian Military Highway and Svaneti's winter roads

- —Flight [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)–[Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) used when it operates, saving a full day of driving each way

- —Private tour throughout, pace set around light, not a fixed coach schedule

- —January to March timing, when snow cover at both locations is most reliable

Itinerary

Day 1Depart [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) along the Georgian Military Highway, stopping at Ananuri fortress and the Gudauri viewpoint, to reach [Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/) by early afternoon. Late afternoon is spent scouting the Gergeti Trinity Church trail and shooting first light on Kazbek.

Day 2Dawn departure to Gergeti Trinity Church for sunrise alpenglow on Kazbek, reached by 4×4 on the access track when conditions allow. In the afternoon we fly [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)–[Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) if the weather-dependent flight is operating that day (checked at booking), or begin the 4×4 transfer to Mestia with an overnight stop if it is not.

Day 3Full day around [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/): the Svan towers of the old town under snow, a drive out to a quieter village such as Lenjeri or Zhabeshi, and late afternoon light on Ushba and Tetnuldi from a viewpoint above town.

Day 4Dawn shoot in [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/), then return to [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) by flight or 4×4, with drop-off at your hotel or Tbilisi airport.

Good to know

- · Roads: the Georgian Military Highway can close after heavy snowfall and the [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) road may need chains, checked at booking via our road-status page

- · Flights: [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)–[Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) is weather-dependent and can be cancelled with little notice, in which case we switch to the 4×4 transfer at no extra cost

- · Dress: layered winter clothing and waterproof boots, dawn temperatures in Kazbegi and Svaneti can drop below -15°C

- · Fitness: short walks on packed snow and ice, the Gergeti Trinity Church track is steep in places

- · Bring: a tripod, spare batteries (cold drains them quickly), a lens cloth for condensation, and a cable release if you use one

- · Season: January to March gives the most reliable snow cover, but daylight is short, so each stop is built around one or two key light windows rather than a rushed checklist

Questions

**What happens if the Tbilisi-Mestia flight is cancelled?**
We switch to the 4×4 transfer, about eight hours, and adjust the itinerary accordingly. There is no extra cost to you.

**Do I need winter driving experience?**
No. Our driver handles the Georgian Military Highway and Svaneti's winter roads, you concentrate on photography.

**Is the hike to Gergeti Trinity Church difficult in snow?**
It can be steep and icy. We drive up by 4×4 when conditions allow, and walk the last stretch with care otherwise.

**What should I bring for the cold?**
A tripod, wide and telephoto lenses, spare batteries kept warm in an inner pocket, and layered clothing rated for sub-zero dawns.
