A six-day crossing on foot from Tusheti to Khevsureti over the Atsunta Pass, linking the tower villages of [Dartlo](https://gtour.ge/georgia/dartlo/), Mutso and [Shatili](https://gtour.ge/georgia/shatili/).

The route

[Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)[Dartlo](https://gtour.ge/georgia/dartlo/)[Shatili](https://gtour.ge/georgia/shatili/)

Why this tour

- —One of the few trekking routes in Georgia that physically connects two mountain regions, Tusheti and Khevsureti, rather than looping back to the same trailhead

- —Crosses the Atsunta Pass at 3,431 m, well above treeline, with views back toward the Tusheti ridgeline and forward into Khevsureti

- —Passes through [Dartlo](https://gtour.ge/georgia/dartlo/) and [Shatili](https://gtour.ge/georgia/shatili/), both built up with medieval defensive stone towers, on foot rather than by road

- —Mix of guesthouse nights in villages and tents at higher camps, with horses carrying the main loads so you walk with a day pack

- —Border-zone permit for Tusheti and Khevsureti arranged by us in advance, no separate paperwork for you to chase

- —Small, fixed group size with a licensed guide who knows the river crossings and camp sites along the route

Itinerary

Day 1Drive from [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) to Omalo over the Abano Pass by 4×4, a rough unpaved road that takes most of the day; overnight in a guesthouse in Omalo.

Day 2Trek from Omalo to [Dartlo](https://gtour.ge/georgia/dartlo/), three to four hours through pine forest and pasture along the Tushetis Alazani river; overnight in a guesthouse in Dartlo among its stone defensive towers.

Day 3Trek from [Dartlo](https://gtour.ge/georgia/dartlo/) to Girevi, the last inhabited village before the pass, five to six hours with a steady climb; camp near Girevi.

Day 4Cross the Atsunta Pass at 3,431 m, the high point of the trek, then descend toward Khidotani on the Khevsureti side; a long day, seven to eight hours, with no villages en route so carry water and lunch.

Day 5Continue down through Khevsureti to Mutso, an abandoned fortress village on a rock spur above the Arghuni valley, then on to [Shatili](https://gtour.ge/georgia/shatili/); five to six hours, mostly downhill.

Day 6Explore [Shatili](https://gtour.ge/georgia/shatili/)'s interlocked tower-houses in the morning, then drive back to [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/), five to six hours on mountain roads; arrival evening.

Good to know

- · This trek runs July to mid-September only; the Atsunta Pass holds snow outside this window and the route is not safe or passable

- · You need a good level of fitness: six consecutive trekking days, one of them seven to eight hours with a 3,431 m pass and no shelter en route

- · Weather above 3,000 m changes fast; bring a windproof layer, hat and gloves even in August

- · Boots need to be broken in before you arrive, river crossings and loose scree are part of several days

- · Mobile signal is patchy to absent once you leave Omalo and does not return reliably until [Shatili](https://gtour.ge/georgia/shatili/)

- · Nights at altitude and in camp are cold even in summer; a four-season sleeping bag is recommended

Questions

**Do we need previous trekking experience for this route?**
No technical climbing is involved, but you should be comfortable walking six to eight hours a day on uneven mountain terrain for six consecutive days.

**What happens if the Atsunta Pass is closed by weather?**
Your guide monitors conditions daily; if the pass is not safe on the planned day we adjust the schedule and wait, or in rare cases reroute, the border-zone permit covers the full area.

**Can we do this trip outside July to mid-September?**
No, we do not run this route outside that window because of snow on the pass; for other seasons we can suggest our Tusheti — Georgia's Last Wild Frontier (4 Days) tour, which does not cross Atsunta.

**Is the group size fixed or can we book privately?**
The price shown is for two travelling together; solo travellers and larger groups are quoted separately, contact us with your dates.

Prices are per person for two travelling together, in euros; solo travellers and larger groups are quoted on request. Every departure is private and adjusted to you. Hotels, wineries and restaurants on our routes are [verified by GTour](/verified/).
