A two-day hike into [Lagodekhi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/lagodekhi/)'s reserve to Black Rock Lake on the Dagestan border, with a night in a ranger hut and no detour loop to slow you down.

The route

[Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/)[Lagodekhi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/lagodekhi/)

Why this tour

- —Reaches the same alpine lake as the 3-day loop trek, in half the time, for hikers who want the destination without the extra ridge day

- —Overnight in a [Lagodekhi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/lagodekhi/) Protected Areas ranger hut, with permits and the bed arranged before you arrive

- —Trail runs through beech and spruce forest into subalpine meadows before the final approach to the lake at altitude

- —Private transfer from [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) to the [Lagodekhi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/lagodekhi/) ranger station and back, no public minibus connections to coordinate

- —A good fitness test for travellers considering Tusheti or Svaneti multi-day treks later in the trip

- —Border-zone trail inside one of the Caucasus's oldest protected areas, open since 1912

Good to know

- · This is a long, steep trail with a full pack over two days, not a casual walk, good fitness and some hiking experience are expected

- · The ranger hut is basic: shared bunks, no shower, cold water only, bring a sleeping bag or liner

- · Best attempted June to September, the trail can be closed or unsafe with snow and swollen streams outside this window, checked at booking

- · Weather changes fast above the treeline, pack layers, a rain shell and sturdy waterproof boots regardless of the forecast

- · The border-zone section requires the permit arranged in advance, carry your passport on the trail

- · Phone signal is intermittent to absent once past the ranger station

Questions

**How is this different from the 3-day Black Rock Lake trek?**
The 3-day version adds a loop section and a second night, covering more ground at a gentler daily pace. This 2-day route goes up and back the same way, which means longer walking days but one less night in the mountains.

**Can beginners do this trek?**
It suits hikers with some multi-day trekking experience and reasonable fitness. If this would be your first overnight trek, the Georgian Military Highway day trip or a guided day hike is a gentler introduction.

**Is the lake itself swimmable or is it just a viewpoint?**
Black Rock Lake sits at altitude in a border-zone setting; swimming is not the point of the visit, and water temperature and reserve rules make it unlikely in any case, checked at booking.

**What happens if weather forces a turnaround?**
The guide makes that call on the trail. If conditions block the final approach, you still get the forest and meadow sections and the hut overnight, with a refund policy for the unused portion detailed in our booking terms.
