# Should you buy a SIM card or an eSIM for Georgia?

For most 2026 trips, an eSIM activated before you fly is the easier choice, and a physical tourist SIM bought at the airport is the cheaper one. A Magticom or Silknet tourist SIM with 10-20GB typically costs 20-30 GEL, about €7-€10 at the late-October 2026 rate (see the current conversion at [gtour.ge/data](https://gtour.ge/data/)), while an international eSIM app usually charges $15-25 for a comparable regional package with no passport needed at point of sale.

The nuance that matters more than price is coverage, not format. Georgian law requires every SIM, physical or embedded, to be registered against a passport, either at the counter or through the activating app, so this is not a reason to prefer one over the other. What does differ by location is the mountains: [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/), [Batumi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/), [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/) and the main highways have solid 4G from all three operators, but Tusheti, the [Ushguli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ushguli/) road above [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) and several high passes have patchy or no signal regardless of which SIM or eSIM you carry, because the limiting factor is tower placement, not the card.

### Operators and where to buy

Georgia has three retail mobile networks: Magticom, Silknet and Geocell (marketed to visitors as Cellfie). All three sell tourist SIM packages at kiosks in the arrivals halls of Tbilisi International Airport, Kutaisi International Airport and Batumi International Airport, usually open for every arriving flight, and at branded shops in city centres and shopping malls. If your flight lands very late, confirm the counter’s hours with the operator in advance; some airport desks reduce staffing overnight.

### 2026 prices at a glance

| Option | Typical data | Typical price |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Airport tourist SIM, Magticom or Silknet | 10GB, 15-30 days | 20-25 GEL (about €7-€9) |
| Airport tourist SIM, larger bundle | 20GB, 30 days | 30-35 GEL (about €10-€12) |
| International eSIM app | 5-10GB, 7-15 days | $12-25 (roughly €11-€23) |

Lari-to-euro conversions use the National Bank of Georgia rate checked on 26 October 2026; operators set prices in GEL and can revise them at any time, so verify the exact figure at the counter or in the app, and cross-check the daily rate at [gtour.ge/data](https://gtour.ge/data/) before you pay.

### eSIM apps and activation

If your phone supports eSIM (most iPhones since the XS and recent Android flagships), buying a Georgia or regional Caucasus plan through an international eSIM app before departure lets you land with data already working, useful if you want a ride-hailing app or a map running the moment you clear passport control. These apps route traffic over the same Magticom, Silknet or Geocell towers as a local SIM, so the signal you get in [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) or Tusheti is identical either way. The trade-off is price per gigabyte, which is usually higher than a local tourist SIM, and the fact that you cannot easily top up in person if something goes wrong.

### Coverage in the mountains

- Kazbegi and Gudauri: reliable 4G along the [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) and in [Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/) itself; see our [Gudauri day trip](https://gtour.ge/tour/gudauri/) and [Gergeti Trinity Church day trip](https://gtour.ge/tour/kazbegi-gergeti-trinity-church-in-a-day/) for the route.

- Mestia and the Svaneti valley floor: good signal in town; coverage thins noticeably past Mestia and is intermittent on the road to Ushguli, as covered on our [Mestia and Ushguli tour](https://gtour.ge/tour/mestia-ushguli-3-days/).

- [Racha](https://gtour.ge/georgia/racha-lechkhumi/) and Khvanchkara country: moderate, with gaps around the lakes; see our [Racha tour](https://gtour.ge/tour/racha-khvanchkara-wine-mountain-lakes-2-days/).

- Tusheti: very limited beyond Omalo and effectively none on the Abano Pass crossing, detailed on our [Tusheti expedition](https://gtour.ge/tour/tusheti-expedition/) page.

- Vardzia and the [Samtskhe-Javakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/samtskhe-javakheti/) plateau: moderate, patchy near the cave city itself, see our [Vardzia day trip](https://gtour.ge/tour/vardzia-cave-city/).

If a mountain itinerary is central to your plans, download offline maps before departure and tell your driver or guide that connectivity cannot be guaranteed; this is standard practice on any of our multi-day tours into Svaneti, Tusheti or Racha, listed at [gtour.ge/tours](https://gtour.ge/tours/).

### Passport registration

Under Georgia’s telecommunications regulations, every SIM card, physical or embedded, must be linked to an identity document before the network will activate it. At an airport or shop counter this means handing over your passport for a staff member to scan or photograph; the process takes a few minutes. For an eSIM bought through an app, the same requirement is usually met during the in-app verification step, which can ask for a passport photo or scan before the QR code unlocks. Keep your passport with you when buying or activating either option, and if an operator’s process differs from what is described here, treat the operator’s own counter staff as the current authority, since retail procedures can be adjusted without public notice.

### Where this comes from

This guide draws on the published arrivals and services information of Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi international airports, the general consumer-registration principle under Georgia’s electronic communications legislation available through the Legislative Herald at matsne.gov.ge, and GTOUR’s own driver and guide reports from recent trips to Kazbegi, Svaneti, Racha and Tusheti. Lari-to-euro figures use the National Bank of Georgia rate as recorded at [gtour.ge/data](https://gtour.ge/data/) on 26 October 2026. Prices and registration procedures for SIM and eSIM products change without much notice, so confirm the current figure or rule directly with Magticom, Silknet or Geocell, or with your eSIM provider, before you travel. Checked 27 October 2026.
