Ilia Lake, usually called simply Kvareli Lake, is a reservoir on the edge of Kvareli town in Kakheti, formed by damming the Duruji River in the 1960s to irrigate the vineyards of the Alazani valley. It is named after Ilia Chavchavadze, the writer and national figure born in Kvareli in 1837, whose house-museum stands a short drive away. Today the lake functions as the town’s main summer recreation spot, with swimming, pedal boats and a lakeside walk against a backdrop of the Caucasus foothills.

### What you see

Ilia Lake is a long, narrow reservoir, roughly 2 kilometres end to end, held back by an earthen dam and set in a shallow valley just outside central [Kvareli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kvareli/). The water is used for irrigation, so levels shift a little through the season, but for most of spring and summer it sits full and calm, reflecting the wooded hills on its northern shore and open vineyard land to the south. A pebble and packed-sand beach near the dam has sunbeds, a few snack kiosks and pedal-boat rental in season, and a path runs along part of the shoreline for walking rather than a full loop. Fishing is practised informally by locals. There is no grand architecture here; the appeal is the combination of still water, vine rows and the Caucasus ridge on the horizon, all within walking distance of a small Kakhetian town.

### History

The reservoir was built in the Soviet period, in the 1960s, by damming the Duruji River to secure irrigation water for the Kindzmarauli vineyards that surround Kvareli, one of [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/)‘s most tightly regulated wine appellations. The lake carries the name of Ilia Chavchavadze, the 19th-century writer, publisher and public figure regarded as a founder of modern Georgian national thought, who was born in Kvareli in 1837. His restored family house in the town is now a museum, run as part of Georgia’s state museum network ([museum.ge](https://museum.ge)). A few kilometres from the lake, a Soviet-era tunnel cut into the mountainside to store Kindzmarauli wine at a constant temperature has itself become a visitor attraction, reflecting the same postwar push to develop the district’s irrigation and wine infrastructure together; the Kindzmarauli appellation that the valley is built around is registered and protected under Georgia’s wine law ([wine.gov.ge](https://wine.gov.ge)). In recent decades the lake has shifted from a purely agricultural reservoir to Kvareli’s default summer leisure spot, with basic beach facilities added without materially changing its original shoreline.

### How to get there

From [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/), Kvareli is about 120 kilometres east, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes by car via [Gurjaani](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gurjaani/) or via [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/), and the lake is a further 5–10 minutes from the town centre. Marshrutkas run from Tbilisi’s Samgori station to Kvareli, taking around 2.5–3 hours; from the town centre it is a short taxi ride or a 25–30 minute walk to the lake. There is no train service to Kvareli. With us, the lake is a stop on the Eastern Kakheti — Nekresi, Gremi, Kvareli and the [Lagodekhi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/lagodekhi/) Forest day trip (https://gtour.ge/tour/lagodekhi-nekresi-day-trip/), or it can be added to a Car with Driver by the Day (https://gtour.ge/tour/car-with-driver-by-the-day/) or a day with a Licensed Private Guide (https://gtour.ge/tour/licensed-guide-by-the-day/) if you are already based in Kakheti.

### How long and the best time

An hour to ninety minutes covers a walk and a swim; half a day allows time to also visit the wine tunnel and the Chavchavadze house. Swimming season runs from June to September, with July and August warmest and busiest on weekends with Georgian families. Late September and October bring cooler water but clearer mountain views and a quieter shore, which suits photography more than swimming.

### Tips

- The shoreline is pebbly in places, so water shoes are worth packing if you plan to swim.

- Early morning and late afternoon give the softest light on the water and the hills behind it.

- Weekday visits are noticeably quieter than weekends and local holidays in summer.

- Facilities are basic and seasonal; bring cash, sunscreen and your own towel outside peak months.

- Combine the lake with the nearby wine tunnel and the Ilia Chavchavadze house-museum to make a half-day of it.
