Alaverdi Cathedral (St George’s Cathedral) is an eleventh-century Georgian Orthodox church about 20 km west of Telavi in Kakheti, built in 1011 under King Kvirike III on the site of a sixth-century monastery founded by Joseph of Alaverdi, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers. At roughly 50 metres it was the tallest building in Georgia until Tbilisi’s Holy Trinity Cathedral was consecrated in 2004. It remains a working monastery with its own vineyard, and it anchors the Alaverdoba festival held every year on 28 September.

### What you see

The cathedral stands inside a walled monastic compound on the flat Alazani plain, visible for several kilometres before you reach it. The exterior is plain, pale stone with a tall drum and cupola; the scale, rather than decoration, is the point. Inside, fragments of fresco survive from several periods, from the eleventh century through later repainting in the seventeenth century, though much was lost to whitewashing and earthquake damage over the centuries. The surrounding walls, built up over time as the site doubled as a fortress, enclose outbuildings, a bell tower, a small cemetery and the monks’ working vineyard and wine cellar, where qvevri wine is still produced on site.

### History

Monastic life at Alaverdi dates to the sixth century, when Joseph of Alaverdi, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers credited with reinforcing Christian monasticism in Georgia, settled here. The cathedral standing today was built around 1011 by King Kvirike III of Kakheti-Hereti, replacing the earlier church. The complex suffered repeated damage from earthquakes and from the Timurid invasions of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and was significantly repaired in the seventeenth century under King Teimuraz I of [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/), whose patronage is recorded in later restoration work on the frescoes and walls. During the Soviet period the monastery was closed and the grounds used for secular purposes; monastic life resumed after Georgian independence in 1991. The site is listed as an immovable cultural heritage monument of national significance under Georgian law, and the active monastery today falls under the Georgian Orthodox Church’s Alaverdi Eparchy ([patriarchate.ge](https://patriarchate.ge), [nea.gov.ge](https://nea.gov.ge)).

### How to get there

From [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/), Alaverdi is about 20 km west, roughly 25 minutes by car along the main Telavi–[Akhmeta](https://gtour.ge/georgia/akhmeta/) road. From [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) it is about 110 km, 1.5 to 2 hours by car via [Sagarejo](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sagarejo/) and [Gurjaani](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gurjaani/), or via the Gombori Pass directly to Telavi. There is no direct marshrutka to Alaverdi itself; travellers usually take a Tbilisi–Telavi marshrutka and then a taxi for the final stretch, since the cathedral sits a few kilometres off the main road. With us, Alaverdi is included on the Telavi & Kakheti Wine Region day tour (10 hours, from €128 per person in a group of four to six, gtour.ge/tour/telavi-kakheti-wine/) and on the longer Kakheti Grand Wine & Heritage 3-day tour; a private car with driver for a day around Telavi and Kakheti is also available (from €150 per day for a sedan).

### How long and the best time

Plan 45 minutes to an hour and a half, more if you combine the visit with a wine tasting on site. Morning and late afternoon give softer light for photographs across the open plain. The Alaverdoba festival on 28 September draws large crowds and a traditional fair around the monastery; visit earlier or later in the day if you want quiet. September and October, during the Rtveli wine harvest, is a lively season in the surrounding vineyards generally.

### Tips

- Dress modestly; headscarves and wrap skirts for women and long trousers for men are usually available at the entrance if needed.

- Photography is generally fine outside and in the courtyard; be discreet inside the church and avoid photographing during services.

- The Alazani plain is exposed and can be hot in summer and muddy in wet weather; check road conditions before an off-season visit.

- Queues are rare except around the 28 September festival.

- Combine the visit with [Ikalto](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ikalto-village/) Academy and Gremi, both within a short drive, to make a full day of Kakheti’s monastic sites.
