Abano Pass is the roughly 2,850-metre gravel crossing on the single mountain road that links Kakheti’s Alazani valley to the Tusheti highlands in Mtskheta-Mtianeti’s wider mountain zone, including the village of Dartlo. It is the only vehicle route into Tusheti and is closed by snow for most of the year, typically open from June to October. The current jeep track replaced older pack-horse trails during the Soviet period, and the surrounding Tusheti Protected Areas were established by Georgian law in 2003.

### What you see

At the top of Abano Pass the road narrows to a shelf cut into bare rock, with hairpin turns, drops of several hundred metres on one side, and no guardrails for most of the climb. There is no paving, no fence, and often no phone signal. On a clear day the pass gives a long view back down toward Pshaveli and the Alazani valley on the [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/) side, and forward into the Pirikiti and Gometsari gorges of Tusheti. Cloud frequently sits on the summit even in summer, cutting visibility to a few metres, and patches of old snow can linger into July. Shepherds still move sheep across the pass on foot in spring and autumn, a practice tied to the seasonal migration between Tusheti’s high pastures and Kakheti’s winter grazing land.

### History

Before motor vehicles, Tush communities used footpaths and horse trails over Abano and the neighbouring Borbalo and Atsunta passes to reach Kakheti, carrying goods and moving livestock twice a year. The present jeep track was cut during the Soviet period, widening these older routes into a track usable by trucks and, later, 4×4 vehicles; local accounts place reliable seasonal vehicle access from around the late 1970s. The surrounding highlands were given formal protection in 2003, when Georgian law created the Tusheti Protected Areas, grouping a strict nature reserve, a national park and a protected landscape around the villages served by this road ([matsne.gov.ge](https://matsne.gov.ge)). The Agency of Protected Areas now manages the Tusheti Protected Landscape that the pass crosses ([apa.gov.ge](https://apa.gov.ge)). The road itself has never been paved over the summit, and proposals to improve it have been discussed publicly for years without a fixed completion date, so its character as a seasonal, high-risk mountain track has remained largely unchanged.

### Opening hours and tickets

| Item | Usual pattern |
| --- | --- |
| Season | Early-to-mid June until snowfall, usually by mid-October (checked at booking) |
| Daily access | No official hours; daylight travel only is strongly advised |
| Fee | None, it is a public road, not a ticketed site |
| Vehicle requirement | High-clearance 4×4 only; standard cars and most minivans are refused by drivers and locals alike |

### How to get there

From [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/), drive east to [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/) and on to Alvani, about 2 to 2.5 hours on paved road. From Alvani the unpaved road to Omalo covers roughly 73 km, climbing over Abano Pass; in a 4×4 this normally takes 4 to 6 hours depending on weather and traffic at the narrow sections, bringing the total from Tbilisi to around 7 to 8 hours. In season, shared jeeps and seasonal minivans run from Telavi or Alvani toward Omalo, though schedules are informal and weather-dependent; there is no train or regular marshrutka service over the pass itself. From [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/) or [Batumi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/) there is no shorter approach; the practical route is via Tbilisi and Alvani. With us, a multi-day 4×4 with driver runs at €230 per day for touring beyond the Tbilisi area, and our Tusheti — Georgia’s Last Wild Frontier (4 Days) itinerary builds the crossing and overnight stops into a fixed-price private trip (solo €1,840, two travellers €1,150 each, four to six €978 each; https://gtour.ge/tour/tusheti-expedition/).

### How long and the best time

Crossing the pass itself takes 1 to 2 hours from the final switchbacks on either side, but plan for a half-day or more once stops for views and passing other vehicles are counted. The reliable window is mid-July to early September, when snow risk is lowest and wildflowers cover the upper slopes; June can still carry snow at the summit and October brings an increasing chance of early closure. Most travellers combine the crossing with at least one night in Omalo or [Dartlo](https://gtour.ge/georgia/dartlo/) rather than attempting a same-day return.

### Tips

- Travel only with a driver experienced on this specific road; self-drive rental cars are not recommended and many rental contracts exclude Tusheti.

- Carry warm layers regardless of season, temperatures at the summit can be 15 to 20 degrees colder than in the Alazani valley.

- Fill the fuel tank in Alvani or Telavi, there are no service stations between Alvani and Omalo.

- Do not attempt the crossing in heavy rain or thick fog, visibility and traction both drop sharply at the single-lane sections.

- Expect short waits at passing bays where vehicles must take turns, descending traffic generally yields to vehicles climbing.

- Photograph the switchbacks from the lower viewpoints in early morning, before afternoon cloud typically forms over the pass.

### Nearby

- Omalo (main Tusheti village and road terminus, with the Keselo tower complex)

- Dartlo (medieval tower village in the Pirikiti gorge)

- Shenako (small church village with views over the Pirikiti valley)

- Parsma (compact tower settlement further along the gorge)

- Diklo (border village close to the watershed ridge)
