Between late January and March, the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area host one of Africa’s most concentrated wildlife spectacles. An estimated 300,000 wildebeest calves arrive within a six-week span, with roughly 80 percent born in a single three-week window in February. The phenomenon, known as predator swamping, works because the sheer volume of births far exceeds what resident lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs can consume, giving the herd an evolutionary edge over spreading births through the year.

The Ndutu area draws the densest concentrations of both prey and predator, thanks to volcanic soils that produce calcium-rich grass supporting milk production, plus open sightlines that help mothers spot threats early. Calves typically stand within minutes and can run within hours of birth. “The calving season is the most humbling thing I witness every year,” says Nikos Pocock, head guide and co-founder of Africa Calling Safaris, describing the plains as unsentimental ground where life and death arrive in equal measure daily.

Unlike the Mara River crossings of July to October, which compress drama into brief, chaotic episodes, calving season delivers sustained predator activity across open grassland — and draws noticeably fewer visitors. Access is via Kilimanjaro Airport or overland from Arusha, with the East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100) covering both Kenya and Tanzania; travellers from the Caucasus typically connect via Nairobi, Istanbul or Doha. Ndutu Safari Lodge remains the area’s signature property and, along with seasonal mobile camps, requires booking six to twelve months ahead for peak February dates.
