Pack for Georgia the way you would pack for a single day that runs from a subtropical coastline to a glacier, because that is roughly what a one- or two-week trip here does. The short answer: bring a core of light layers plus two specialist additions — a proper waterproof-windproof shell and real hiking boots for the mountains, and a compact dress-code kit (headscarf, wrap skirt, long sleeves) for churches and monasteries, which you will visit even on a city-only itinerary. Add swimwear only if the coast or a thermal pool is on your route, and winter ski gear only for [Gudauri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) or [Bakuriani](https://gtour.ge/georgia/bakuriani/) between December and March.

Prices, opening rules, and road conditions in Georgia change between seasons and sometimes between weeks, so treat every number and cutoff below as a guide to verify before you fly: check the e-visa portal at [evisa.gov.ge](https://evisa.gov.ge/), road and pass status at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge/en), and our own live page at [gtour.ge/road-status](https://gtour.ge/road-status/) for the Kazbegi and [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) routes specifically.

### Think in layers, not in seasons

[Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) sits in a temperate, fairly dry basin; [Batumi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/), 350 kilometres west, is genuinely subtropical and one of the wettest cities in Europe; Kazbegi and Svaneti sit at 1,700 to 2,200 metres with alpine weather that can turn in under an hour. A single Georgian day in June can start at 28°C in the capital and end with sleet at Gergeti Trinity Church. The practical response is a three-layer system rather than a seasonal wardrobe: a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid layer (fleece or light down), and a waterproof-windproof shell with a hood. This combination covers the Kazbegi 2-Day Mountain Journey and [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) & [Ushguli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ushguli/) — 3 Days in Svaneti tours as readily as a week in Tbilisi and [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/).

### Sun and rain, month by month

Official long-term averages are published by the National Statistics Office; for trip-specific planning, use the ranges below as a conservative guide and check [geostat.ge](https://geostat.ge/en) or georgia.travel closer to your dates.

| Period | Tbilisi and the east | Batumi and the coast | Kazbegi / Svaneti |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Dec–Feb | Cold, dry, occasional snow, 0–8°C | Mild, wettest season, 7–12°C, heavy rain | Deep snow, −10 to 0°C, passes close |
| Mar–May | Mild, unsettled, showers likely | Warming, still wet, pack a real rain shell | Snowmelt, muddy trails, cold nights |
| Jun–Aug | Hot, 28–35°C, dry spells with storms | Hot and humid, swimwear season, sudden downpours | Cool to mild by day, near-freezing nights above 2,000m |
| Sep–Nov | Warm, dry, best light for photography | Warm sea, fewer crowds, rain returns by late October | First snow possible from mid-October, as now |

### Church and monastery dress code

Georgia’s churches and monasteries are active places of worship, and the dress code is consistent and non-negotiable at the door: women cover their hair with a headscarf, wear a skirt or wrap below the knee over trousers if needed, and cover their shoulders; men wear long trousers and remove hats; shorts are refused for both sexes at most monastery gates. Scarves and wrap skirts are usually lent free at the entrance of major sites, but queues form in high season, so carrying your own (a large cotton scarf doubles as both) saves time. Shoes stay on. This applies at Gergeti Trinity Church above Kazbegi, at [Svetitskhoveli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mtskheta/) and Jvari in Mtskheta, at [Bodbe](https://gtour.ge/georgia/bodbe/), and across the Christian Georgia — Pilgrimage and Sacred Heritage in 8 Days and Monasteries of Georgia — Mtskheta, the Thirteen Fathers and Kakheti routes. For the Georgian Orthodox Church’s own guidance, see patriarchate.ge.

### Mountains: Kazbegi and Svaneti, even in July

- Waterproof-breathable jacket and trousers, not just a windbreaker

- Broken-in hiking boots with ankle support, not trainers, for Gergeti and Ushguli trails

- Insulating mid layer plus a warm hat and gloves, needed at the Gergeti Trinity Church car park and viewpoint on cool or cloudy days in any month

- High-SPF sunscreen and sunglasses — UV is stronger at altitude regardless of air temperature

- A headtorch and a basic first-aid kit for Svaneti’s unpaved sections and Tusheti’s remoter trails

Kazbegi National Park and Svaneti’s high roads are managed with seasonal access notes; check current conditions through the Agency of Protected Areas at [apa.gov.ge](https://apa.gov.ge/en) and [road status](https://gtour.ge/today/) at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge/en) before a Kazbegi — Gergeti Trinity Church in a Day trip or the longer Tusheti — Georgia’s Last Wild Frontier expedition, since the Abano Pass to Tusheti is a seasonal dirt road, not a year-round route.

### Winter in Gudauri and Bakuriani

Gudauri runs roughly from December to April depending on snowfall; see current season dates through [gudauri.travel](https://gudauri.travel/en). Pack or rent:

- Insulated, waterproof ski jacket and salopettes (rentable locally if you prefer not to fly with them)

- Thermal base layers, a mid-weight fleece, and spare ski socks

- Goggles, a neck gaiter or balaclava, and waterproof gloves

- Sturdy, waterproof winter boots for walking between hotel and lift, separate from ski boots

- Lip balm with SPF — high-altitude sun and wind chap skin fast

Our Georgia in Winter — Gudauri Skiing, Tbilisi & Kakheti tour builds in transfer flexibility for weather days, which is worth asking about if you are travelling independently and relying on the Gudauri road in heavy snow.

### Cities: Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi

Tbilisi’s Old Town is cobbled and hilly, with steep lanes up to Narikala; Batumi’s boulevard and [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/)‘s centre are flatter but still reward proper walking shoes over sandals. Keep one set of smarter-casual clothes for dinner or a wine cellar visit, and a light scarf that works both against sun and, folded, as a church cover-up. City packing lists overlap heavily between our Tbilisi & Mtskheta — The Essential First Day, Batumi & the [Ajara](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ajara/) Mountains — 2 Days, and Kutaisi & Western Georgia — 3 Days itineraries: comfortable shoes, a day bag, a reusable water bottle, and layers for evening temperature drops, which are sharper in Tbilisi’s dry climate than on the humid coast.

### The coast: swimwear and sudden rain

Batumi and the Adjara coast are swimwear season from roughly June to September, with the Black Sea at its warmest in August. Adjara is also the wettest region in the country, so pack a compact rain shell alongside beach kit, and footwear for pebble beaches rather than fine sand. A rash guard or light wetsuit top is useful for early June or late September swims when the sea is still cool. If your route combines Batumi with [Borjomi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/borjomi/), Bakuriani & [Rabati](https://gtour.ge/georgia/akhaltsikhe/) or the Ajara mountain villages above the city, add the same mid-layer-plus-shell combination used for Kazbegi, since altitude in the Ajara highlands brings cooler evenings even in summer.

### Medicines, documents and insurance

Carry printed and digital copies of: your passport photo page, travel insurance policy with a 24-hour emergency number, any e-visa confirmation from [evisa.gov.ge](https://evisa.gov.ge/), and prescriptions for regular medication in generic (not just brand) names, ideally with a doctor’s letter if you carry needles, strong painkillers, or controlled substances. Georgia does not require specific vaccinations for entry from most countries, but routine immunisations should be up to date; for current health advisories consult the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health at ncgh.ge, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel pages at [mfa.gov.ge](https://mfa.gov.ge/en/) for entry-requirement updates, since these are the kind of rules that can change without much notice. A basic kit — rehydration salts, altitude-appropriate pain relief, blister plasters, and any personal allergy medication — covers most of what pharmacies in smaller mountain towns may not stock. If you plan to go above 2,500 metres in Svaneti or Tusheti and have a heart or respiratory condition, discuss altitude precautions with your doctor before travelling rather than relying on general advice.
