A day trip from [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) to Kazbegi ([Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/)) takes a full day: roughly three hours of driving each way plus two or three hours at the top, so plan for 10 to 11 hours door to door. In 2026, a private version through our own index runs from €256 per person for a solo traveller down to €136 per person in a group of four to six, with the figures and currency conversions kept current at [gtour.ge/data](https://gtour.ge/data/).

The nuance is that the headline price and the headline drive time both assume good weather and a working road. The [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) crosses the Jvari Pass at close to 2,400 metres, and the last stretch up to Gergeti Trinity Church is a dirt track that ordinary sedans cannot manage, open or closed depending on snow, ice and occasional landslides. Build in a buffer, check the pass status on the morning you travel, and treat the 4×4 ride to Gergeti as a near-certain extra cost rather than an optional add-on.

### The route and what you stop for

Most private and group itineraries follow the same line out of Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Highway:

- **[Ananuri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ananuri/)** — a walled fortress complex with two churches on the edge of the Zhinvali reservoir, about 65 km from Tbilisi and the first proper stop, usually 20 to 30 minutes.

- **Gudauri** — a ski resort strung along the mountainside at around 2,200 metres, worth a short photo stop for the Devil’s Valley views even outside winter; see our [Gudauri day](https://gtour.ge/tour/gudauri/) if you want more time here instead.

- **Jvari Pass (Cross Pass)** — the road’s highest point, marked by a Soviet-era mosaic monument, often the coldest and windiest stop of the day whatever the season.

- **Stepantsminda and Gergeti Trinity Church** — the end point, with the church sitting above the village at roughly 2,170 metres against Mount Kazbek.

### Getting up to Gergeti

Gergeti Trinity Church is not reachable by regular car. From Stepantsminda village, travellers switch to a shared or private 4×4 for the final climb, a ride of about 15 to 20 minutes each way on an unpaved, rutted track. Shared jeeps wait at a fixed spot in the village and leave once full; a private 4×4 for just your group removes the wait but costs more. Either way, this leg is separate from the main transport and is usually paid in cash in Stepantsminda rather than bundled into a flat tour price quoted in Tbilisi.

### What a private day trip costs

Our Kazbegi day tour (10 to 11 hours, English-speaking driver-guide, private vehicle, Ananuri and Gudauri included) prices per person as follows, with figures kept current at [gtour.ge/data](https://gtour.ge/data/):

| Group size | Price per person |
| --- | --- |
| Solo traveller | €256 |
| Two travellers | €160 |
| Three travellers | €152 |
| Four to six travellers | €136 |

If you would rather arrange your own schedule, a plain car-with-driver day costs €90 for a sedan or €150 for a 4×4 (Land Cruiser or Prado class) up to 10 hours and 250 km, with a licensed guide added separately at €110 for a full day; a fixed one-way transfer to Kazbegi alone, without stops or a guide, is €75 by sedan or €95 by minivan or 4×4. Those building a longer stay should look at our two-day Kazbegi — 2-Day Mountain Journey, which starts at €624 solo and falls to €332 per person for four to six travellers, giving more time at altitude and a night near Mount Kazbek instead of a same-day return.

### Group tours and other options

Shared group minibuses to Kazbegi run most days from Tbilisi through various local operators and are the cheapest way to see Ananuri, Gudauri and Gergeti if you are travelling alone and do not need a private schedule; prices and departure points vary by company and season, so confirm directly with whichever operator you book, or check listings through [georgia.travel](https://georgia.travel/). The trade-off is a fixed itinerary, shared jeep queues at Gergeti, and no flexibility if the weather turns.

### Winter notes

From roughly November through March, snow and occasional avalanche risk can close sections of the Georgian Military Highway, most often right at the Jvari Pass, sometimes for several hours while clearing work is done. Chains or winter tyres are commonly required by law in this period, and vehicles without them are turned back at checkpoints. Before you set out, check the live [road status](https://gtour.ge/today/) for the Tbilisi–Kazbegi section through the Georgian Road Department at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge/), and see our own [road-status](https://gtour.ge/road-status/) page for a same-day summary. If you are coming specifically for snow, our Georgia in Winter tour builds in Gudauri skiing alongside Tbilisi and [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/) rather than treating the mountains as a single rushed stop.

### Where this comes from

Driving distances and stop order reflect the standard route of the Georgian Military Highway as described by Georgia’s national tourism administration; altitude figures for the Jvari Pass and Gergeti Trinity Church are widely cited round numbers rather than survey data, so treat them as approximate. Road closure and winter equipment rules come from the Georgian Road Department. Prices and the lari exchange rate were checked against our own index on 26-27 October 2026 and should be reverified at gtour.ge/data before booking, since fuel costs and seasonal demand can move them.
