[Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/), the hub town of [Upper Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/), is reached from [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) by road in eight to nine hours, or in roughly five to six hours from [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/), via the town of [Zugdidi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/zugdidi/) and the Enguri gorge. As of October 2026 this main approach road is mostly paved and passable by ordinary cars in good weather, while the onward track to [Ushguli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ushguli/) and any winter travel call for a 4×4 and a driver who knows the route.

The nuance is seasonal and practical rather than legal: there is no single “safe or unsafe” verdict, because conditions change with rain, snowmelt and snowfall. Summer and early autumn are straightforward for most travellers; late autumn through spring bring ice, landslides after rain, and closures on the higher Ushguli track and any mountain pass routes, which is why we check live status before every departure and recommend you do the same.

### Three ways in

- **From Tbilisi** — about 460 km and 8-9 hours by direct road via Kutaisi and Zugdidi; almost nobody does this as a single push, most travellers overnight in Kutaisi.

- **From Kutaisi** — about 230 km, 5-6 hours by road along the same Zugdidi route. Small seasonal flights to Mestia’s Queen Tamar Airport have run in past years from Tbilisi or Kutaisi on light aircraft, but schedules are weather-dependent and change year to year; confirm current status through [georgia.travel](https://georgia.travel) or the operator before building a trip around a flight.

- **From Zugdidi** — the closest practical gateway, about 140 km and 2.5-3 hours up the Enguri gorge. Many travellers combine this with the overnight train from Tbilisi to Zugdidi, booked through [railway.ge](https://railway.ge), then a road transfer the rest of the way.

### Road conditions by season

| Season | Zugdidi-Mestia road | Mestia-Ushguli track |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Summer (June-Sept) | Paved, sedan-friendly in dry weather | Open most days, gravel, fords, best with 4×4 |
| Autumn (Oct-Nov) | Fine but watch for rain-related rockfall | Narrowing weather window, closes with first heavy snow |
| Winter (Dec-March) | Snow and ice, chains or winter tyres needed | Frequently closed or very difficult |
| Spring (April-May) | Snowmelt can cause mud and swollen streams | Variable, often still closed into May |

Live conditions, closures and works on Georgia’s national and regional roads are published by the Roads Department at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge), and we check this before every Svaneti departure. We also keep a short daily note on our own [road status](https://gtour.ge/road-status/) page for the routes we actually drive.

### The Ushguli road specifically

Ushguli, the cluster of villages above Mestia, sits about 45-50 km further up the valley, roughly two to two and a half hours each way. The track is partly paved and partly gravel, crosses several streams, and narrows in places. It is realistically open from June through early October; outside that window it can close for days after snow or heavy rain, and even in summer a dry spell can turn to mud within hours of a storm. We treat a 4×4 as standard for this leg rather than optional, regardless of the month.

### Do you need a 4×4

- **Zugdidi to Mestia, May to October, dry weather** — an ordinary sedan or minivan is usually fine.

- **Mestia to Ushguli, any month** — 4×4 recommended, and in practice required once there has been rain or snow.

- **Anywhere in Svaneti, November to April** — 4×4 or a car fitted with winter tyres, plus a driver experienced on mountain ice.

This is also how we price and assign vehicles: our car-with-driver service lists the 4×4 category as required for Svaneti’s winter passes and for Ushguli specifically, alongside Tusheti, on the current rate sheet at [gtour.ge/data](https://gtour.ge/data/).

### Our tours and transfers

For most readers the simplest route is a private transfer rather than self-drive. Our fixed-price service from Kutaisi airport straight to Mestia runs by 4×4 or minivan for €190 per car, listed with our other fixed transfer prices at [gtour.ge/data](https://gtour.ge/data/). For the full circuit we run the Mestia Ushguli 3 Days in Svaneti tour with a 4×4 and licensed driver built in, and Svaneti also features as the mountain leg of our longer Georgia in 10 Days Tbilisi to Svaneti to the Sea itinerary, which spreads the drive over two days each way rather than one long push.

### Where this comes from

Road classifications, works and closures for the national routes toward Zugdidi and Svaneti are published by Georgia’s Roads Department at georoad.gov.ge, checked 26 October 2026. Train schedules for the Tbilisi-Zugdidi overnight service come from Georgian Railway at railway.ge. General seasonal and destination guidance for Svaneti is drawn from the national tourism portal georgia.travel. Prices and vehicle categories quoted above are GTour’s own current rates at gtour.ge/data, correct as published 26 October 2026 alongside the Lari reference rate from the National Bank of Georgia; because flight schedules, road works and prices can all change, always verify current status through the linked official pages before you travel.
