Winter in Georgia runs roughly from December to March, and the honest answer is: the lowlands are cold but manageable ([Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) hovers near 0-7°C by day), the [Black Sea](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/) coast around Batumi stays mild and wet (7-12°C), and the mountains are properly cold and snowy, with resorts such as [Gudauri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) and [Bakuriani](https://gtour.ge/georgia/bakuriani/) typically open from early-to-mid December into April.

The nuance is that “Georgia in winter” covers several climates within a two-hour drive of each other. A traveller can ski at 2,200 metres in Gudauri in the morning and reach Tbilisi’s milder streets the same afternoon. Mountain passes close with little notice when snow or avalanche risk rises, so any winter itinerary needs a flexible day built in, and [road status](https://gtour.ge/today/) should be checked the morning you travel, not the week before.

### Temperatures by region

| Region | Typical daytime, Dec-Feb | Night lows | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tbilisi | 0 to 7°C | -5 to 1°C | Dry cold, occasional light snow |
| [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/) ([Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/), [Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/)) | -1 to 6°C | -6 to 0°C | Frost common, fog in valleys |
| Batumi and the [Adjara](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ajara/) coast | 7 to 12°C | 3 to 8°C | Mild but rainy, humid |
| [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/) and [Imereti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/imereti/) | 4 to 10°C | 0 to 5°C | Between the coast and the highlands |
| Gudauri, Kazbegi highlands | -5 to 2°C | -15 to -5°C | Heavy snow, strong wind at altitude |
| [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) ([Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/)) | -5 to 3°C | -12 to -3°C | Deep snow, some side roads close |

These are conservative ranges for an average winter; any given week can run colder or milder. For the day you are actually travelling, check current conditions on the gtour.ge/today page rather than relying on seasonal averages, and for background climate data see the [National Environmental Agency](https://nea.gov.ge/en).

### Ski resorts and season dates

- **Gudauri** (2,200 m): usually open early-to-mid December through mid-to-late April, Georgia’s largest and most reliable resort for lift-served skiing and freeride; see [gudauri.travel](https://gudauri.travel) for the current season calendar.

- **Bakuriani** (1,700 m): a family-oriented resort, typically open from mid-December into March, with shorter, gentler slopes than Gudauri.

- **Hatsvali and Tetnuldi**, Svaneti: smaller, scenic resorts near Mestia, season similarly December to April depending on snowfall; see mountainresorts.ge, the state resort developer, for lift and piste status.

- **[Goderdzi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/goderdzi/)**, Adjara: the smallest of the group, weather-dependent, and more likely to have limited operating days.

Our Georgia in Winter — Gudauri Skiing, Tbilisi & Kakheti (6 Days) tour and the Gudauri — Mountain Escape day trip both plan around this calendar; current per-person prices are on gtour.ge/data.

### Road closures: the pattern to expect

Three routes are worth planning around:

- The Georgian Military Highway over the Jvari (Cross) Pass, between Kobi and Gudauri, closes temporarily in heavy snow or avalanche risk, sometimes for a few hours, occasionally for a full day. Check [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge) before driving to Kazbegi.

- The Abano Pass into Tusheti is closed entirely in winter, normally from around late September until June; this region is not reachable by road in the cold months.

- Side roads in upper Svaneti and the Mamison Pass toward [Racha](https://gtour.ge/georgia/racha-lechkhumi/) can close after heavy snowfall and reopen once ploughed.

Our drivers watch these closures daily; the gtour.ge/road-status page summarises the same official feed in plain language before we confirm any mountain pickup.

### Christmas on 7 January

The Georgian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, so Christmas is celebrated on 7 January, not 25 December. Expect Tbilisi’s Alilo procession, candlelit services at [Sioni](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sioni/) and Sameba cathedrals, and quieter streets around the civil New Year (1 January) by comparison. For the church calendar, see [patriarchate.ge](https://patriarchate.ge).

### What to pack

- Layers: thermal base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a windproof, waterproof outer shell.

- Waterproof, grippy footwear for icy pavements in Tbilisi and Kutaisi.

- Proper ski or snow gear (gloves, hat, goggles) if heading to Gudauri or Bakuriani; most resorts rent skis and boards locally.

- Sunglasses for snow glare at altitude, even on overcast days.

- A lighter jacket for Batumi, where winter is wet rather than bitterly cold.

### Where this comes from

Climate ranges are conservative seasonal averages consistent with Georgia’s National Environmental Agency data; ski season dates and road-closure patterns reflect the published calendars of Gudauri and the state mountain resorts developer, and the official road authority’s status reports; the Julian Christmas date follows the Georgian Patriarchate’s calendar. Checked 27 October 2026. Because snowfall and closures vary year to year, always confirm the day’s conditions on gtour.ge/today and gtour.ge/road-status before travelling into the mountains.
