### Overview

Bobokvati is a small coastal resort settlement in the Kobuleti Municipality of Ajara, on Georgia’s Black Sea coast, roughly midway between the town of Kobuleti and the city of [Batumi](/georgia/batumi/). It sits directly on the shoreline, where the subtropical lowlands of Ajara meet the sea, and it is reached by the coastal road that links Batumi to Kobuleti, Poti and ultimately Tbilisi. The village is not a historic town in its own right; its importance today lies in its position within the dense strip of beach resorts, guesthouses and seasonal restaurants that has grown along this part of the coast over the past two decades.

Bobokvati matters to travellers chiefly as a quieter alternative base to central Batumi, close enough for day trips into the city and to the forested hills inland, yet set back from the busiest boulevards. It gives access to the pebble beaches typical of this stretch of the Black Sea, to tea and citrus plantations characteristic of Ajara’s agricultural belt, and to protected natural areas such as Mtirala National Park. GTour includes Bobokvati in private itineraries that combine the coast with Batumi’s old town and the hills of inland Ajara; see the regional overview for [Batumi and Ajara](/georgia/batumi/) and the full list of [private tours](/tours/).

### History

The wider region of Ajara, in which Bobokvati lies, was part of various Georgian kingdoms and principalities through the medieval period before coming under Ottoman control from the sixteenth century onward.

Following the establishment of Soviet rule in Georgia, the Adjar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was created in 1921, formalising the region’s distinct administrative status, a status that the present-day Autonomous Republic of Ajara continues within independent Georgia. Through the Soviet period, the coastal lowlands around Kobuleti and the villages south of it, including the area now known as Bobokvati, were developed for tea, citrus and tobacco cultivation, part of the broader agricultural economy described for Kobuleti Municipality.

Since Georgian independence, and especially after the rapid growth of Batumi as a Black Sea resort city from the 2000s onward, construction of hotels, guesthouses and seasonal restaurants has extended along the coast south of Kobuleti, drawing Bobokvati and neighbouring villages into the modern resort economy that now defines this part of the coastline.

### What to see

#### Bobokvati beach

The village’s own shoreline is a stretch of dark pebble beach typical of the Ajara coast, backed by seasonal guesthouses and cafés. It is quieter than the central Batumi boulevard beaches, making it popular with families and travellers who prefer a slower pace within easy reach of the city.

#### Mtirala National Park

Inland from the coast, the forested slopes rise toward Mtirala National Park, known for exceptionally high rainfall, dense Colchic temperate rainforest and waterfalls. It is managed as a protected area and offers marked hiking trails that can be visited on a half-day trip from the coast.

#### Batumi Botanical Garden

A short drive north of central Batumi, the Batumi Botanical Garden occupies a dramatic clifftop site above the sea and holds plant collections assembled from the late nineteenth century onward. It is a popular half-day excursion combined with a stay in Bobokvati.

#### Kobuleti coastline and wetlands

North of Bobokvati, the town of Kobuleti and its surrounding wetlands and beach promenade offer another access point to the sea, along with cafés and markets selling local produce. The protected marshland areas near Kobuleti are part of Georgia’s network of coastal nature reserves.

### Getting there

From Tbilisi, Bobokvati is reached by the Rikoti Pass highway and the Kutaisi–Samtredia–Kobuleti road, a drive of about 5 hours 35 minutes depending on traffic and road works; check current conditions on the [road status page](/road-status/) before travelling, especially in winter. Marshrutka minibuses run from Tbilisi’s Didube station toward Batumi or Kobuleti, from where a short local taxi or marshrutka covers the final stretch to Bobokvati. The Tbilisi–Batumi overnight and day trains, operated by [Georgian Railway](https://railway.ge), reach Batumi station, followed by a short onward transfer of around 30–40 minutes by road.

From Kutaisi, the journey takes roughly 2 hours 15 minutes by car or marshrutka along the same coastal highway. From Batumi, Bobokvati is about 50 minutes by road, making it a straightforward day trip or a base for travellers who prefer to stay outside the city centre. GTour arranges private transfers and guided tours with an English-speaking guide from any of these cities; see the [guides section](/guides/) for planning help or contact GTour directly to arrange a day itinerary.

### When to go

The swimming season on this stretch of the Black Sea generally runs from late May to September, with July and August the warmest but also the busiest months along the coast. Ajara has a humid subtropical climate with heavy rainfall, particularly in autumn, so travellers aiming to combine a beach stay with hiking in Mtirala National Park may find late spring or early autumn more comfortable, with lighter crowds and milder temperatures.

### Where to stay and eat

Bobokvati and its immediate surroundings have a growing number of small hotels, guesthouses and seasonal restaurants. Wine lovers can visit the [Tsertsvadze Wine Cellar](https://gtour.ge/georgia-places/place-tsertsvadze-wine-cellar/) for a tasting of regional wines. GTour’s verified register lists more hotels, wineries and restaurants in the area; see the [best-of selections](/best-of/) for curated options across Ajara.

### Practical notes

The local currency is the Georgian lari (GEL); card payments are widely accepted in larger hotels but smaller guesthouses and beach cafés may prefer cash. The coastal road between Batumi and Kobuleti can be congested during peak summer weekends, so allow extra time for the final approach to Bobokvati in July and August. Mobile coverage and Wi-Fi are generally reliable along this stretch of coast. Travellers planning to combine Bobokvati with mountain routes further inland should check seasonal closures via the [road status page](/road-status/), as some secondary roads in Ajara’s highlands are affected by weather outside the summer months.
