### Why go

Batumi is Georgia’s Black Sea capital and the seat of the Adjara region. It pairs a subtropical seafront city of roughly 170,000 people with a mountainous hinterland of forests, waterfalls, and wine villages. The contrast is the main draw: palm-lined boulevards and glass towers on the coast, and traditional stone villages an hour or two inland.

Batumi works as a standalone beach break, a base for day trips into mountain Adjara, or a stop on a longer coast-and-highlands itinerary. It is also increasingly used as a winter base, with the Goderdzi ski resort reachable from the city.

### When to go

- **June to September** is the main season, with warm sea temperatures and the fullest calendar of boulevard life, though midsummer is humid.

- **Spring and autumn** bring fewer crowds and lower humidity, but rain is common, especially in autumn; Batumi is one of the wetter cities in Georgia.

- **Winter** is mild on the coast and is the season to combine the city with skiing at Goderdzi, higher in the Adjara mountains.

### Getting there

- **By road from Tbilisi:** around 5-6 hours by car or minibus, depending on traffic and stops. Check current conditions on the [road status page](/road-status/) before travelling, particularly in winter.

- **By train:** a direct overnight or daytime service from Tbilisi, about 5 hours, arriving near the seafront.

- **By air:** short domestic flights connect Tbilisi and Batumi, useful for travellers short on time.

- Batumi is also close to the Turkish border at Sarpi, making it a practical entry or exit point for cross-border itineraries.

### What to see

#### The seafront city

- The 7-kilometre seaside boulevard, Batumi’s main public space, good for walking or cycling at any time of day.

- The Alphabet Tower, built around the characters of the Georgian script.

- The Ali and Nino moving statue, two metal figures that slide together and apart, based on the novel of the same name.

- Europe Square and the Piazza, two adjoining squares with Italian-influenced architecture.

- The Argo cable car, running up to a hilltop viewpoint over the city and coastline.

- The dolphinarium, a family-oriented attraction near the seafront.

#### Old Town

- Narrow streets from the Ottoman era, now home to cafes, shops, and restored facades, a contrast to the modern towers nearby.

#### Nature and history near the city

- The botanical garden at Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), a large hillside collection of plants from several continents with sea views.

- Gonio-Apsaros, a Roman-era fortress near Sarpi on the Turkish border, one of the oldest fortified sites on the Georgian coast.

#### Mountain Adjara

- Machakhela, a valley known for old watermills, arched bridges, and forest.

- Mtirala National Park, a rainforest-like reserve with waterfalls and walking trails.

- Keda and its surrounding wine villages, producing local varieties in a cooler, wetter climate than eastern Georgia.

- The Goderdzi pass, leading to the Beshumi resort area and the Goderdzi ski resort, a developing winter destination.

### A three-day plan

#### Day 1: Batumi city

Morning in the Old Town, then the boulevard, Europe Square, the Piazza, and the Alphabet Tower. Take the Argo cable car before sunset for a view over the bay.

#### Day 2: Coast south to the Turkish border

Visit the botanical garden at Mtsvane Kontskhi in the morning (around 20-30 minutes from the centre), then continue south to Gonio-Apsaros fortress and Sarpi, roughly 30-40 minutes further. Return to Batumi by evening.

#### Day 3: Mountain Adjara

Head inland toward Keda and its wine villages (around 1-1.5 hours), with a stop in Machakhela or Mtirala National Park depending on whether the focus is wine or walking. Travellers with more time or a 4×4 can continue toward the Goderdzi pass, though this adds significant driving time and is weather-dependent. Return to Batumi in the evening.

Adjust timings in rain, which is common outside summer, and check the [road status page](/road-status/) before heading into the mountains.

### Where to stay

- **Old Town:** small hotels and guesthouses within walking distance of restaurants and the boulevard, good for travellers without a car.

- **The boulevard and new town:** larger hotels and towers, many with sea views, suited to longer beach stays.

- **Inland Adjara:** a small number of guesthouses in villages such as Keda, useful for travellers spending more time in the mountains or visiting in winter.

GTour’s verified register lists hotels and guesthouses for the Batumi region below, checked against current standards and guest feedback.

### Eat and drink

- **Adjarian khachapuri:** the region’s signature dish, a boat-shaped bread filled with cheese and topped with butter and a raw egg, mixed in at the table.

- **Borano:** a simpler melted cheese and butter dish, closely related to the khachapuri filling.

- **Sinori:** a layered dish of dough and cheese, less commonly found outside Adjara.

- **Seafood:** more prominent in Batumi than in most of Georgia, given its coastal position.

- **Wine:** Keda and other inland villages produce local wines in a wetter, cooler style than eastern Georgian regions; small cellars are often open to visitors.

### Practical notes

- **Money:** the lari is the local currency; cards are widely accepted in the city, less reliably in mountain villages.

- **Connectivity:** mobile coverage is good along the coast and patchy in parts of mountain Adjara, particularly near Goderdzi.

- **Roads:** coastal roads are generally in good condition; mountain roads toward Goderdzi can be narrow and are affected by rain and winter snow. Check the [road status page](/road-status/) before driving inland.

- **Beaches:** Batumi’s beaches are pebbly rather than sandy, which affects footwear and expectations for sunbathing.

- **Safety:** Batumi is a generally safe city; usual precautions apply around nightlife areas and casinos, which operate alongside the city’s hotels.

- For planning and logistics beyond this guide, see [GTour’s tours](/tours/) and the broader [destination guides](/guides/).
