### Overview

Akhaldaba is a small resort village in Khashuri Municipality, in the [Shida Kartli](/georgia/) region of central Georgia. It sits a few kilometres from the town of Surami, on the eastern slopes of the Likhi Range, the watershed that divides eastern and western Georgia and is crossed nearby by the Surami Pass. The village has a resident population of about 1,800 and lies within pine and mixed forest at a moderate elevation, which gives it a climate traditionally considered beneficial for rest and recuperation.

Akhaldaba matters less as a monument destination and more as a quiet stopover and short-break resort between Tbilisi and the west of the country. It is useful to travellers planning to break up the Tbilisi–Kutaisi–Batumi corridor, or to combine a night in the forest with a visit to Surami town and the wider Shida Kartli region. GTour includes Akhaldaba in private itineraries on request, pairing it with the verified hotels, wineries and sights listed in the [tours](/tours/) section below.

### History

The wider area has long been shaped by its position on the route over the Likhi watershed. The Surami Pass, next to which Akhaldaba lies, has served for centuries as one of the principal land links between the historic kingdoms of Kartli, in the east, and Imereti, in the west, a role noted in general accounts of the town of Surami. Control of this corridor mattered to successive Georgian kingdoms and to armies moving between the Caucasus lowlands and the Black Sea hinterland.

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, settlements along this forested stretch of the Mtkvari basin, including Akhaldaba, developed a secondary identity as climatic resorts, following a pattern seen across Georgia where pine forest, altitude and mineral-rich springs were used for rest cures and respiratory treatment. Detailed Soviet-era sanatorium records are not centrally published online, so specific construction dates for Akhaldaba’s resort buildings are not given here; broadly, this function expanded during the Soviet period alongside similar resorts in the Borjomi Gorge.

Since Georgian independence, Akhaldaba has been administered as part of Khashuri Municipality, within the Shida Kartli region. In recent decades the village has shifted toward small-scale tourism, with guesthouses and hotels serving both convalescent visitors and travellers using the Tbilisi–Kutaisi highway, which passes close by.

### What to see

#### Surami Fortress

A short drive away in Surami town stands a medieval fortress associated with control of the pass, built and rebuilt over several centuries as regional power shifted between Georgian rulers. The site offers walls and a hilltop position with views over the Surami valley. It is best combined with a walk through the town below.

#### Surami Pass and the Likhi Range

The road and rail crossing of the Likhi Range near Akhaldaba marks the traditional boundary between eastern and western Georgia. The pass is of interest for its role in historic trade and military movement, and for the change in vegetation and climate noticeable on either side of the watershed.

#### Pine forest and resort quarter

Akhaldaba’s older sanatorium buildings and forest paths reflect its history as a climatic retreat. Walking routes through the surrounding pine woodland are the main daytime activity, suited to a slow half-day rather than a packed sightseeing schedule.

#### Surami town and market

Surami is known locally for roadside vendors selling churchkhela, the traditional walnut-and-grape-juice sweet, making it a common stop for travellers passing along the highway. A short visit pairs well with the fortress and a coffee break before continuing toward Kutaisi or back to Tbilisi.

### Getting there

From **Tbilisi**, Akhaldaba is reached in about 2 hours 25 minutes by road, following the Tbilisi–Kutaisi highway west through Gori and Khashuri before turning off near Surami. From **Kutaisi**, the drive is approximately 2 hours 40 minutes along the same highway in the opposite direction. From **Batumi**, allow around 4 hours 55 minutes via Kutaisi and Khashuri.

Marshrutka minibuses running between Tbilisi’s Didube station and Khashuri or Kutaisi pass close to the turnoff; travellers should ask the driver to stop near Surami and arrange onward transport the short distance to Akhaldaba. The Tbilisi–Kutaisi–Batumi railway, operated by [Georgian Railway](https://railway.ge/), stops at Khashuri station, from where a taxi completes the journey. Before travelling in winter, check current conditions on the Surami Pass via the [road status](/road-status/) page.

### When to go

Akhaldaba can be visited year-round. Late spring through early autumn is most comfortable for forest walks and outdoor time, while winters are cooler and occasionally snowy, consistent with its elevation on the Likhi Range. Those combining it with a Tbilisi–Kutaisi road trip should allow flexibility, since the Surami Pass can see reduced visibility or snow in winter months.

### Where to stay and eat

Accommodation near Akhaldaba includes the [Evergreen Surami hotel](https://gtour.ge/georgia-places/place-evergreen-surami-hotel/), a convenient base for exploring the resort village, Surami town and the surrounding forest. GTour’s verified register lists more hotels, guesthouses and places to eat below, each checked for current operation and suitability for independent and guided travel.

### Practical notes

Akhaldaba is a village-scale resort with limited services; banking, pharmacies and larger shops are better handled in Khashuri or Gori. Mobile network coverage is generally reliable along the main highway. Georgian lari is the currency used; cards are not universally accepted outside larger hotels. GTour can arrange an English-speaking driver-guide and plan a day combining Akhaldaba with nearby Surami and other stops; see [guides](/guides/) for background reading and [best-of](/best-of/) lists for route ideas.

### Questions travellers ask

#### Is Akhaldaba the same village as the one near Borjomi?

No. There is more than one Akhaldaba in Georgia. This Akhaldaba is in Khashuri Municipality, Shida Kartli, near Surami, and is distinct from any similarly named settlement further south near Borjomi.

#### How far is Akhaldaba from Tbilisi?

By road it is approximately 2 hours 25 minutes from Tbilisi, mostly along the Tbilisi–Kutaisi highway.

#### Can I visit Akhaldaba as a day trip?

Yes. It works well as a short stop on a longer drive between Tbilisi and Kutaisi, or as a half-day addition to a visit to Surami and its fortress.

#### What is Akhaldaba known for?

It is known locally as a small climatic resort set in pine forest, historically used for rest and recuperation, and today valued for its quiet setting near the Surami Pass.

#### Is there public transport directly to Akhaldaba?

Direct marshrutka service is limited. Most travellers take a Tbilisi–Kutaisi marshrutka or train to Khashuri or Surami and continue by taxi for the final short distance.

#### What is the Surami Pass and why is it significant?

The Surami Pass crosses the Likhi Range, the ridge separating eastern and western Georgia. It has historically served as a key route for trade and military movement between the regions.

#### Are there hiking opportunities around Akhaldaba?

The surrounding pine forest offers walking paths suited to a relaxed half-day outing rather than long-distance trekking, making it a good complement to more demanding hikes elsewhere in Georgia.

#### Is Akhaldaba suitable for a winter visit?

It can be visited in winter, though travellers should check road conditions on the Surami Pass before departure, as snow can affect the highway at this elevation.

#### Does GTour arrange tours to Akhaldaba?

Yes. GTour arranges private transfers and guided itineraries that include Akhaldaba, typically combined with Surami town and other Shida Kartli sights, with an English-speaking driver-guide.
