Shavnabada Monastery Winery is a monastic wine producer set on Mount Shavnabada in the Kvemo Kartli region, south of Tbilisi. The winery operates as part of the monastery complex and continues Georgia’s centuries-old winemaking tradition, reflecting the country’s long association between religious communities and viticulture.

The surrounding area is a highland landscape of forested slopes and open countryside typical of Kvemo Kartli, a region known for its mix of monasteries, rural villages and varied cultural heritage. The nearby town of Manglisi, with its historic cathedral, lies within reach, and the broader Tetritskaro district offers additional monastic and scenic sites worth combining with a visit. Access is generally by road from Tbilisi, making it feasible as part of a day trip into the southern highlands.

This place suits travelers interested in Georgia’s intertwined traditions of faith and wine, as well as those seeking quieter, less-visited rural destinations outside the main Kakheti wine circuit. It is well suited to visitors who appreciate monastic settings, mountain scenery and an understated approach to wine heritage.

Wine — Kvemo Kartli, Georgia

Shavnabada Monastery Winery continues Georgia’s centuries-old winemaking tradition. The monastery’s wines are crafted by the monks using ancient Georgian winemaking methods, with great care and dedication.

The grapes are pressed in a traditional wooden wine press, after which the wine undergoes natural fermentation and is aged in qvevri—large clay vessels buried underground. Once matured, the wine is bottled, preserving the unique character of traditional Georgian winemaking.
