Five days is enough to see Georgia’s three essential faces: a capital that mixes Persian courtyards with Soviet modernism, a mountain village under an 5,000-metre volcano, and a wine region where qvevri clay jars have been used for 8,000 years. The itinerary that works best, and the one GTOUR builds most often for first-time visitors, is two nights in [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/), a full day trip up the [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) to Kazbegi, and two nights in [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/) before returning to Tbilisi for departure. It needs one long travel day and one early start, but no internal flights and no more than three hours of driving on any single day.

This guide gives the day-by-day plan, honest driving times, three ways to budget it (self-drive with a guide, private car and driver, or a ready-made small-group tour), and the adjustment needed if your flight lands at [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/) rather than Tbilisi. Mountain-pass conditions and opening hours change with the season, so where a detail is likely to move we say how to check it rather than quote a number that might be wrong by the time you read this.

### Why this order, and not another

Kazbegi and Kakheti sit in opposite directions from Tbilisi, roughly three hours north and two hours east, so trying to link them directly adds a long cross-country transfer with little to see along the way. Looping back through Tbilisi each time keeps driving sensible: north for the mountains, back to the capital, then east for the vineyards, then one last short run back for a flight. Travellers with a long layover or an extra day sometimes swap the order, doing Kakheti first and Kazbegi last; both work equally well, and GTOUR’s day-trip tours (Georgian Military Highway — [Ananuri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ananuri/), Gudauri and Gergeti in a Day and Kakheti Classic — [Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/), [Bodbe](https://gtour.ge/georgia/bodbe/) and Two Cellars in a Day) can be booked in whichever sequence suits your flights.

### Day by day

| Day | Overnight | What fills the day | Approx. driving |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Tbilisi | Arrival, Old Town, Narikala and the sulphur baths; settle the jet lag with a slow afternoon | 30-45 min from the airport |
| 2 | Tbilisi | Mtskheta’s Jvari and [Svetitskhoveli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mtskheta/) in the morning, then the capital’s museums, Fabrika or Vake Park | 20 min each way to Mtskheta |
| 3 | Tbilisi (full day out) | Georgian Military Highway: Ananuri fortress, Gudauri’s views, Gergeti Trinity Church above [Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/) | 3-3.5 hrs each way |
| 4 | Kakheti | Transfer east via Sighnaghi or [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/), a cellar visit, lunch at a family farm | 2-2.5 hrs from Tbilisi |
| 5 | Tbilisi (departure) | Second Kakheti morning (Alaverdi, Tsinandali or a market walk), then back to Tbilisi for the flight | 2-2.5 hrs return |

Day 3 is the long one: Stepantsminda is roughly 150 km from Tbilisi but the road climbs over the 2,379-metre Jvari Pass, so allow three hours each way rather than the two the distance alone suggests. The Roads Department publishes live conditions for this stretch, which is worth checking the morning you travel, especially outside the summer months, at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge/en). Gergeti Trinity Church itself sits inside Kazbegi (Mtirala) National Park territory managed by the Agency of Protected Areas, whose page on the park has current trail and access notes at [apa.gov.ge](https://apa.gov.ge/en).

### What it costs, three ways

Prices below are per person in euro and come directly from GTOUR’s published rates; they fall as the group grows because the car and guide are shared.

| Approach | Solo | Two | Four to six |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ready-made 5-day tour (Slow Kakheti and Kazbegi in 5 Days) | €2,160 | €1,350 each | €1,148 each |
| Build your own: car with driver by the day (sedan) x5 + licensed guide x3 | roughly €1,470 shared across the car | same car cost, split two ways | same car cost, split among the group |
| Component day trips only (airport transfers, Military Highway day, Kakheti day) | from about €700 | from about €440 each | from about €395 each |

For the self-drive approach, a Car with Driver by the Day (sedan) runs €240 for a solo traveller or €150 each for a pair for up to ten hours, and a Licensed Private Guide by the Day is €224 solo or €140 each for two; combining the two for the Kazbegi day and one Kakheti day, with simple transfers on the other days, lands close to the ready-made tour’s price once everything is added up, which is normal: the packaged tour mainly saves you the planning, not the driving cost. See the full rate card at [gtour.ge/data](https://gtour.ge/data/) before booking either way, since fuel and seasonal demand can move the day-rate figures slightly.

A rough currency check: at the National Bank of Georgia’s rate for 28 October 2026, GEL 2.894 per euro, a €150 car day works out to about GEL 434. Convert at the day’s actual rate before paying in lari, since it moves daily.

### If you land at Kutaisi instead of Tbilisi

Kutaisi International Airport serves a growing list of European low-cost routes, and plenty of visitors now start or end their Georgian trip there rather than in the capital. The itinerary above still works, with one change: your first or last transfer runs Kutaisi–Tbilisi rather than from Tbilisi’s own airport. GTOUR’s Kutaisi Airport to Tbilisi — Private Transfer takes about 3.5 hours and costs €304 solo or €190 each for a couple; current flight schedules and terminal information are on kutaisiairport.com. Travellers who want to see western Georgia properly rather than just pass through it should look at the dedicated Western Georgia in 5 Days — Kutaisi, Canyons, [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) and [Batumi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/) tour instead of forcing the Tbilisi-Kazbegi-Kakheti loop onto a Kutaisi arrival; trying to do both regions in five days spreads the time too thin.

### Where to stay for this route

- Tbilisi: Old Town or Vera for walkability to the sights on days 1 and 2; both are a short, flat taxi ride from the Military Highway turn-off on day 3.

- Kakheti: Sighnaghi for hill-town views and an easy wine-tasting walk, or Telavi if you want shorter drives to Alaverdi and Tsinandali on day 5.

- No overnight is needed in Kazbegi itself for this five-day version; travellers who want to sleep under the mountain and add the Gergeti Glacier hike should look at the two-day Kazbegi — 2-Day Mountain Journey instead and extend the trip to six days.

### When to go, and what changes by season

Late spring and September to October give the most reliable combination of open passes, green or turning vineyards, and comfortable walking weather, which is one reason the Kakheti grape harvest (rtveli) draws visitors in exactly this window. Winter snow can close the Jvari Pass for short periods and makes the Gergeti road slower; always check the pass status the morning you travel at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge/en) rather than assuming the previous day’s conditions hold. Visa requirements depend on nationality and can change; the official rules and the e-visa application, where applicable, are at [evisa.gov.ge](https://evisa.gov.ge), and GTOUR keeps a plain-language summary by country at gtour.ge/travellers-from.

### The route at a glance

| Leg | Distance | Typical driving time |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tbilisi airport to Old Tbilisi | ~20 km | 30-45 min |
| Tbilisi to Mtskheta | ~25 km | 20-30 min |
| Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) | ~150 km | 3-3.5 hrs via Jvari Pass |
| Tbilisi to Telavi | ~100 km | 1.5-2 hrs |
| Tbilisi to Sighnaghi | ~110 km | 2-2.5 hrs |

Mtskheta’s Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral form part of the UNESCO-inscribed Historical Monuments of Mtskheta, listed at [whc.unesco.org](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/708), and are worth the short detour on day 2 even for travellers who feel they have seen enough churches by day 5.

### Practical summary

- Two nights Tbilisi, one long day trip to Kazbegi, two nights Kakheti, return to Tbilisi to fly out.

- Budget from about €700 per person for the component day trips, or €1,148-€2,160 per person for the ready-made five-day tour depending on group size.

- Check Jvari Pass conditions the morning you travel to Kazbegi at georoad.gov.ge.

- Landing at Kutaisi instead of Tbilisi adds one transfer leg; don’t try to combine this itinerary with Svaneti or Batumi in the same five days.

- Confirm your visa category before booking, since rules vary by nationality, at evisa.gov.ge.

- No overnight in Kazbegi village is required for this version; add a day and book a mountain hotel if you want the Gergeti Glacier hike.
