Yes, two weeks is enough to see the Caucasus mountains, the wine valleys of [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/), the cave cities of the south and the [Black Sea](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/) coast in a single loop, and a 4×4 detour to Tusheti or [Racha](https://gtour.ge/georgia/racha-lechkhumi/) fits comfortably into that window without rushing. The route below runs [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) to Kazbegi, up into the high mountains, back down to Tbilisi, south to Vardzia, west to [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/) and out to Batumi, with two deliberate rest days built in so the trip does not become a string of 6am starts.

The one real seasonal decision is the 4×4 section. Tusheti’s Abano Pass is normally open from late May or June to September or October, weather permitting, which makes it a July-to-September proposition for most travellers; outside that window Racha and Lechkhumi give a comparable sense of remoteness, lakes and village life on a road that is open for most of the year. Everything below is written for either case, with current prices from our own tour pages and a note on where to check conditions before you commit, since mountain road openings and closures change year to year and should always be confirmed close to travel.

### The 14-day loop at a glance

This shape is close to our own Georgia Grand Tour 14 Days, which prices at €6384 solo, €3990 each for two, €3791 each for three and €3392 each for four to six, car, driver, guide and the 4×4 leg included; use it as a benchmark even if you build the route yourself.

### Choosing your 4×4 section: Tusheti or Racha

Tusheti sits beyond the Abano Pass, a dirt road with sheer drops that is one of the more demanding drives in the Caucasus, and it is seasonal: the pass is typically passable from June to September or into early October, and closes with the first serious snow. The [Agency of Protected Areas](https://apa.gov.ge) manages the Tusheti Protected Landscape and is the authority to check for current access and ranger-station information before you travel. Inside the window, three days is enough for Omalo, Dartlo and Diklo; our Tusheti by 4×4 — Omalo, Dartlo and Diklo in 3 Days runs €1424 solo, €890 each for two, €846 each for three, €757 each for four to six. For a longer stay, Tusheti — Georgia’s Last Wild Frontier (4 Days) is €2400 solo, €1500 for two, €1425 for three, €1275 for four to six, and travellers combining Kazbegi, Khevsureti and Tusheti in one expedition can look at the 8-day 4×4 Expedition — Tusheti, Khevsureti and Kazbegi, from €3984 solo down to €2117 each for a group of four to six.

Outside the Tusheti window, or for travellers who prefer a shorter and gentler 4×4 day, Racha and Lechkhumi are open for most of the year, barring heavy winter snow on the higher stretches, and give lakes, Khvanchkara vineyards and Svan-adjacent villages without the Abano Pass exposure. Racha and Lechkhumi by 4×4 — 3 Days is €1344 solo, €840 each for two, €798 each for three, €714 each for four to six; for less time, Racha — Khvanchkara Wine & Mountain Lakes (2 Days) runs €896 solo, €560 each for two, or Racha in a Day from Kutaisi at €376 solo, €235 each for two. Whichever you choose, always confirm the road status before locking the date; our own road-status page and georoad.gov.ge, the state roads department, both post current conditions.

### Rest days: where to slow the pace

A two-week loop with mountain passes on both ends needs at least two days with no driving before 10am. Kazbegi after the Military Highway is the natural first stop: spend day five on foot rather than in the car, with Juta, Sno and Gergeti off the main road, or simply read on a terrace with Mount Kazbek in view. The second rest point works best around Borjomi or Bakuriani on the way south to west, where mineral-water parks, forest paths in Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park and short transfers replace long drives; our Borjomi and Bakuriani — Spa Town and Mountain Air in a Day or the longer Borjomi Family Spa Break fit here depending on how much stillness you want. Families or anyone prone to altitude discomfort on the Abano Pass should build the rest days around, not after, the 4×4 section.

### The south: Vardzia, Rabati and the spa towns

Samtskhe-Javakheti is the part of this loop most visitors regret rushing. Vardzia, a cave monastery complex carved into a cliff above the Mtkvari river in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, is roughly a three-hour drive from Tbilisi each way, which argues for an overnight rather than a single long day if your schedule allows it. Our Vardzia Cave City — Day Trip (12 hours) is €392 solo, €245 each for two, €233 each for three, €208 each for four to six; Vardzia and Rabati — the Long Day South adds Rabati fortress in Akhaltsikhe for €392 solo on the same per-person scale. For a more comfortable pace, The South in 3 Days — Borjomi, Vardzia, Rabati and Abastumani spreads the same ground over three days and two nights, from €1312 solo to €697 each for a group of four to six. This region also borders Turkey, so carry passports even on day trips and check current border notes on [mfa.gov.ge](https://mfa.gov.ge) if your route brushes the crossing.

### The coast: Batumi and the Black Sea

From Kutaisi, Batumi is roughly two and a half hours by private car; our Batumi to Kutaisi Transfer (and the reverse) is €224 solo, €140 each for two, €133 each for three, €119 each for four to six. From Tbilisi direct, allow about six hours with stops, priced at €352 solo, €220 each for two, €209 each for three, €187 each for four to six on our Tbilisi to Batumi Transfer. Two days is the minimum to feel the coast rather than just pass through it: an Old Town and boulevard walk, the Botanical Garden, and if time allows a half-day into the Adjara highlands toward Khulo and the Goderdzi Pass, which is a different climate and culture from the beach promenade. Batumi & the Ajara Mountains — 2 Days bundles this for €864 solo, €540 each for two, €513 each for three, €459 each for four to six. Flying out of Batumi or Kutaisi rather than backtracking to Tbilisi is worth pricing against the airport transfer costs on both ends; check current flight routes on batumiairport.com and kutaisiairport.com.

### Private car, self-drive or mixed: logistics and costs

Three ways to run this loop, each with trade-offs:

- **Fully private, driver included.** A sedan for the lowland days and a 4×4 swap for the mountain section is the least stressful option. Car with Driver by the Day (up to 10 hours) is €240 solo, €150 each for two, €143 each for three, €128 each for four to six per day; a multi-day 4×4 for Tusheti or Racha runs from €230 a day per car on our service pricing, with the driver’s accommodation included once you are overnighting in the mountains.

- **Self-drive with a booked route.** Georgia Self-Drive — 7 Days with Booked Hotels and a Planned Route (€2224 solo, €1390 each for two) can be paired with a separate 4×4 charter for the Tusheti or Racha days only, since a standard rental car should never attempt the Abano Pass. Self-driving the rest of the loop is straightforward on sealed roads.

- **Mixed.** Many travellers self-drive the Kakheti-Kazbegi-south-west circuit and book a licensed 4×4 driver specifically for Tusheti or Racha, then return the rental car. A Licensed Private Guide by the Day is €224 solo, €140 each for two, €133 each for three, €119 each for four to six, and combines with any of the transfer or car-with-driver services above for a fully custom version of this itinerary.

Whichever structure you choose, confirm current figures against our live price table at [gtour.ge/data/](https://gtour.ge/data/) before booking, since fuel costs and seasonal demand shift rates during the year.

### When to go and how to verify conditions

July through September is the only reliable window for the Tusheti leg and is also peak season on the Military Highway and in Kakheti, so book accommodation in Omalo, Dartlo and Sighnaghi well ahead. Racha works as a 4×4 substitute from late spring to autumn and, conditions permitting, into winter for the lower villages, though the higher passes close with snow. For entry requirements, always check the current rules on [evisa.gov.ge](https://evisa.gov.ge) and [mfa.gov.ge](https://mfa.gov.ge) rather than relying on a travel guide written months earlier, since visa-free lists and validity periods are set by government decree and do change. For road openings on the Abano Pass, the Rikoti, and any closures after heavy rain or snow, the state roads department at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge) and our own road-status page are the two sources to check in the week before you travel.
