The order that drives the least and shows the most is: base yourself in [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) for the first three or four nights and treat Kazbegi and [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/) as day trips from the capital, then make one continuous push west through [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/) to [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) and down to the [Black Sea](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/) at Batumi, flying home from there rather than looping back to Tbilisi. In practice that means flying into Tbilisi International and, if your ticket allows it, out of Batumi International, so the car only ever moves in one direction across the country. Ten days is enough for this route if you accept that Svaneti and the highlands each deserve two full nights, not a rushed day visit, and that the Tbilisi to Batumi stretch is the one long transit day you cannot avoid.

This guide, reviewed against our own route sheets and current GTOUR tour pricing, sets out the day-by-day plan, where the airports actually sit relative to the route, three realistic budgets from do-it-yourself transfers to a fully guided package, and the health and road-condition points our founder, a public-health physician, asks us to flag on every Kazbegi and Svaneti itinerary. Where a rule, a road, or a fare could change before your trip, we say so and link the page to check.

### Why this direction, not the reverse

Georgia’s shape does the planning for you. Tbilisi sits in the east-centre of the country; Kazbegi is two and a half hours north on the [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/); Kakheti is two hours east. Kutaisi, Svaneti and Batumi are all west. If you treat Kazbegi and Kakheti as radial day trips from a fixed Tbilisi base, you only drive each road once, out and back, with no luggage in the car and no deadline to reach a new hotel. The single long transfer is Tbilisi to Kutaisi, about three and a half hours by the direct road (see our Tbilisi to Kutaisi Transfer), after which the trip is a straight line: Kutaisi, up into Svaneti, back down, and along the coast to Batumi. Reversing the order, starting on the coast and ending in Kazbegi, works just as well logistically, but most travellers prefer finishing by the sea rather than in the mountains, and flights out of Batumi are more seasonal than those out of Tbilisi, so booking the coast as your exit point first and working backwards is usually the safer planning order.

### Where to fly in and out

- **Tbilisi International (TBS)** has the widest year-round network and is the default arrival point for this route. Check current flight information before booking connections at tbilisiairport.com.

- **Batumi International (BUS)** is seasonal and route-dependent, with more connections in the warmer months; confirm what is actually flying on your dates at batumiairport.com before assuming an open-jaw ticket is possible.

- **Kutaisi International (KUT)**, served mainly by budget carriers, is worth checking if your dates or home airport suit it better than Tbilisi; it sits closer to the western half of this route, so flying in here and out of Batumi (or vice versa) can shorten driving further. See kutaisiairport.com.

If Batumi has no suitable flight on your return date, flying out of Kutaisi instead still saves the long drive back to Tbilisi; our Kutaisi Airport to Batumi transfer and Batumi to Kutaisi Transfer cover either direction.

This is close to our own Georgia in 10 Days — Tbilisi to Svaneti to the Sea itinerary, and travellers who want to drive themselves rather than be driven can follow the same stops with Self-Drive Georgia in 10 Days, which books the hotels and plans the route but leaves you behind the wheel.

### What this costs: three ways to travel it

Costs below are per person in euros, based on GTOUR’s current published prices; for other currencies use the National Bank of Georgia’s daily rate, published at [matsne.gov.ge](https://matsne.gov.ge/) for official exchange notices, or check the rate directly with your bank before changing money.

| Approach | Solo | Two people, each | Four to six, each |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fully packaged: Georgia in 10 Days — Tbilisi to Svaneti to the Sea | €4,304 | €2,690 | €2,287 |
| Self-drive, route and hotels booked: Self-Drive Georgia in 10 Days | €2,864 | €1,790 | €1,522 |
| Car with driver by the day (10 days, roughly) | from €2,400 | from €1,500 each | from €1,280 each |

Building the trip yourself from individual transfers is possible but rarely cheaper once you add a guide for Svaneti’s unmarked mountain roads: the Tbilisi to Kazbegi transfer, Tbilisi to Kakheti transfer, Tbilisi to Kutaisi Transfer, Tbilisi or Kutaisi to Mestia private 4×4 transfer, Mestia to Kutaisi or Zugdidi Transfer, and Batumi to Kutaisi Transfer together run to roughly €1,900 to €2,300 for a sedan or minivan before hotels, guiding, or any of the canyon and cellar day trips are added. A Licensed Private Guide by the Day, at €224 for a group for a full day, is worth adding for Kakheti, Mestia and Old Tbilisi even on a self-drive trip.

### Kazbegi: altitude, passes and when to check conditions

[Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/) sits at roughly 1,740 metres and Gergeti Trinity Church at about 2,170 metres; this is enough altitude for some visitors to notice shortness of breath on the walk or 4×4 track up to the church, particularly if you have come directly from sea level with no acclimatisation. It is not high-altitude illness territory for a short visit, but anyone with a heart or lung condition, or who feels unusually breathless, dizzy or nauseated, should rest, descend if needed, and see a doctor rather than push on; this is general guidance, not a substitute for medical advice tailored to your own history. The Georgian Military Highway crosses the Cross Pass above 2,300 metres and is occasionally closed by snow, rockfall or avalanche risk, including outside the deep winter months; check same-day status before you drive at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge/en), and keep an eye on our own Road Status page for how closures are affecting current tour departures.

### Svaneti: the one road in, and why Mestia needs two nights

The Zugdidi–Jvari–Mestia road is paved for its full length and manageable in a standard car in good weather, but the final approach has sharp bends, livestock on the road, and sections prone to rockfall after heavy rain; winter driving with snow or ice is a different matter and a 4×4 with a driver who knows the road is the sensible choice from November to April. Mestia to Ushguli, by contrast, remains a rough unsealed road for most of its length and is genuinely weather-dependent; it can close after heavy snow or landslip, so this is one leg where booking a transfer rather than self-driving removes real risk rather than just convenience. Two nights in Mestia is the minimum to see Ushguli as a day trip without an exhausting single-day round trip from Kutaisi, which is also offered but turns Svaneti into a long bus day rather than a place to actually be in.

### Visas, documents and what can change

Most travellers planning this route will need to check their visa-free eligibility and the current rules for Georgia before booking; requirements and the list of eligible nationalities are reviewed periodically, so verify your own situation directly at evisa.gov.ge and, for consular questions, at [mfa.gov.ge](https://mfa.gov.ge/en) rather than relying on older articles. If you plan to self-drive, carry your home driving licence together with an International Driving Permit where your licence is not in Latin script, and keep a copy of your rental or hire agreement in the car at all times.

### An alternative to flying between legs: the train

Travellers who prefer not to drive the Tbilisi–Kutaisi leg can take the train instead; Georgian Railway runs daily services between Tbilisi and Kutaisi and on to the coast, which is a reasonable way to cover the longest flat stretch of this route while resting before Svaneti. Check current timetables and fares at [railway.ge](https://railway.ge/en), since schedules are adjusted seasonally.

### Practical summary

- Fly into Tbilisi International; fly out of Batumi International if your dates allow it, otherwise Kutaisi International.

- Base in Tbilisi for Kazbegi and Kakheti as day trips before moving west once, not back and forth.

- Allow two full nights in Mestia; treat Mestia–Ushguli as a transfer booking, not a self-drive, outside summer.

- Budget from roughly €1,500 per person (self-drive, shared) to €2,690 per person (fully packaged, two travellers) for the ten days.

- Check the Georgian Military Highway’s status on the morning you travel, especially outside midsummer.

- Confirm your visa-free eligibility directly on evisa.gov.ge before booking flights.

- Anyone with a cardiac, respiratory or balance condition should ask their own doctor about the Kazbegi and Svaneti altitudes before travelling.
