Late October in Georgia means three things happening at once: [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) throws its autumn city festival, the Orthodox Church marks one of its great feast days at [Svetitskhoveli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mtskheta/) Cathedral, and the high mountains are shutting their doors for winter. By 28 October 2026, Tbilisoba will likely be finished or in its final days (the city sets exact dates each year, usually a weekend in mid-to-late October), Svetitskhovloba on 14 October has already passed, and Tusheti’s single dirt road over the Abano Pass has almost certainly closed to ordinary vehicles with the first serious snow. What remains open and rewarding at this point in the month are the lower and mid-altitude autumn-colour routes: Kazbegi’s gorge roads, [Racha](https://gtour.ge/georgia/racha-lechkhumi/)‘s lake country, and [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/)‘s vineyards, which are finishing their harvest hangover with quieter cellars and bargain light for photography.

This guide sets out, region by region, what you can still reasonably plan for in the last week of October and what to treat as closed for the season, with the official pages to check before you commit, since mountain roads and festival dates move with the weather and the municipal calendar rather than the tourist calendar.

### Tbilisoba: dates and what to expect

Tbilisoba, the capital’s birthday festival, is organised by Tbilisi City Hall and its exact weekend is confirmed only a few weeks ahead each year, typically falling somewhere between early and late October. The programme usually fills [Rike Park](https://gtour.ge/georgia/rike-park/), [Mtatsminda Park](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mtatsminda-park/) and the Old Town with folk ensembles, craft stalls, wine and food tents and a closing concert, with free entry to most events. Because the dates shift year to year, always check the current schedule on [tbilisi.gov.ge](https://tbilisi.gov.ge) before booking around it. If the festival has already closed by the time you arrive, the Old Town itself (Narikala, the sulphur baths quarter, Shardeni and [Sioni](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sioni/) streets) carries the same atmosphere without the stage schedule; our Old Tbilisi Walking Tour or the Tbilisi in a Day private itinerary cover the same ground any day of the year.

### Svetitskhovloba, 14 October

Svetitskhovloba is one of the fixed dates of the Georgian Orthodox calendar, honouring the Robe of Christ, which tradition holds is buried beneath Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. On 14 October the cathedral holds a full liturgy with the Catholicos-Patriarch typically presiding, and Mtskheta’s streets fill with pilgrims and visitors well beyond the town’s usual day-trip crowd. By late October the feast is long over, but Svetitskhoveli itself, along with Jvari Monastery on the hill above the river confluence, remains one of the best short outings from Tbilisi at any time of year, and autumn light on the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers below Jvari is particularly good in the last two weeks of October. For the feast day itself in a future year, check the calendar on [patriarchate.ge](https://patriarchate.ge). Our Mtskheta Half-Day from Tbilisi or the two-hour Mtskheta walking tour both take in Svetitskhoveli and Jvari.

### Autumn colour in Kazbegi

Kazbegi, properly [Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/), and the [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) that climbs to it through the Aragvi and Tergi valleys, usually hold good autumn colour from late September into the second half of October, with birch and beech turning first at lower elevations around [Ananuri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ananuri/) and [Pasanauri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/pasanauri/) and the higher slopes near Gergeti and [Juta](https://gtour.ge/georgia/juta/) losing their leaves earliest. By the last week of October the valley floor can still show colour while Gergeti Trinity Church and the ridges above it may already have the season’s first snow, which in most years makes for the striking combination of gold slopes under a white peak that draws photographers. The road itself is a national highway and stays open, though the Jvari Pass section above Gudauri can close briefly in bad weather; check live conditions on [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge) or our own [road status page](https://gtour.ge/road-status/) before a late-October drive. Day options include the Georgian Military Highway day trip and the Kazbegi — Gergeti Trinity Church in a Day tour; for an overnight, the Kazbegi 2-Day Mountain Journey allows time for Juta or Sno if weather permits.

### Autumn colour in Racha

Racha, reached from [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/) or on a loop through [Ambrolauri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ambrolauri/), tends to hold its colour a little longer than Kazbegi because much of the region sits lower and is sheltered by the Greater Caucasus ridge to the north. Walnut and oak woods around Shaori reservoir, [Nikortsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/nikortsminda/) and the Rioni valley typically peak through the second and third weeks of October, and this is also when Khvanchkara, Racha’s distinctive semi-sweet red, finishes its late grape harvest in the villages around Ambrolauri, since the grapes are picked later here than in Kakheti. The roads into Racha are paved but narrow and wind through forest, so an early-morning start and a car with a driver who knows the switchbacks is worthwhile. Our Racha — Khvanchkara Wine & Mountain Lakes 2-day trip and the longer Racha and Lechkhumi by 4×4 3-day tour are built around this exact window; the single-day Racha in a Day — Shaori Lake, Nikortsminda and Khvanchkara from Kutaisi also works well if time is short.

### Tusheti: the closing window

Tusheti is the clearest case of a hard stop in this guide. The region is reached only by the Abano Pass, an unpaved track that crosses over 2,900 metres and is the highest regularly used road in Georgia; it is officially open for ordinary and 4×4 traffic from roughly late May or early June to some point in autumn, usually the first half of October, after which snow and ice make the pass impassable and it is closed until the following spring. The exact closing date is set by weather, not a calendar, so by 28 October the road to Tusheti should be assumed closed for the year. Confirm current status before planning any trip on [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge) or our [road status page](https://gtour.ge/road-status/), and note that once the pass shuts, Tusheti’s villages are effectively cut off from vehicle access until the following summer. If you are reading this guide for a future September, our Tusheti by 4×4 — Omalo, [Dartlo](https://gtour.ge/georgia/dartlo/) and Diklo in 3 Days and Tusheti — Georgia’s Last Wild Frontier 4-day trip both run in the open season, as does the combined Khevsureti and Tusheti by 4×4 5-day route and the longer 8-day 4×4 Expedition covering Tusheti, Khevsureti and Kazbegi together.

### Wine festivals and the tail of the harvest

Georgia’s main grape harvest, rtveli, runs through September and into early October in Kakheti, the country’s largest wine region, with family cellars and larger estates alike fermenting qvevri wine through the month. By late October most Kakheti harvest events have wound down, but cellars are at their most interesting stage, with new wine still working in buried qvevri and winemakers generally happy to talk through the process with visitors. Higher and later-ripening regions such as Racha, discussed above, and parts of Imereti continue picking into October, so a western Georgia wine trip can still catch harvest activity after Kakheti has finished. For the current state of any named festival or wine event, check the calendar maintained by Georgia’s National Wine Agency at [wine.gov.ge](https://wine.gov.ge) rather than relying on a fixed date, since festival scheduling varies by year. Our Rtveli — Wine Harvest in Kakheti 3-day tour and the longer 5-day Rtveli — the Harvest Week in Kakheti are timed for September into early October; by late October, the Kakheti Classic day trip, the Qvevri Masterclass, or the Western Wine — Imereti and Racha 3-day tour suit the quieter post-harvest cellar visit better.
