March is Georgia’s most unpredictable month and, for that reason, often its best value. Expect sun, rain, wind and even wet snow within the same week: [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) and the eastern lowlands can reach 15 to 18°C on a clear afternoon, while Gudauri, Kazbegi and the high [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) valleys are still under a metre or more of snow. [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/)‘s almond trees begin to flower in the second half of the month, the [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) stays open with occasional short closures, and two public holidays, 3 and 8 March, both built around Georgian and international notions of Mother’s and Women’s Day, mean many families travel domestically and some businesses close for part of the day.

In short: if you want spring, head to the lowlands, Kakheti and the [Black Sea](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/) coast around Batumi, where gardens and markets are already turning green. If you want the last of winter sport, Gudauri, [Bakuriani](https://gtour.ge/georgia/bakuriani/) and Svaneti’s Tetnuldi and Hatsvali lifts usually keep running into late March or early April, conditions allowing. Hotel rates and private-tour prices across the country sit at their shoulder-season low, before the Easter and May bridge-holiday rush, which makes March one of the more efficient months to book a longer itinerary.

### Weather region by region

Georgia’s geography means March weather varies sharply within short driving distances. The table below gives realistic working ranges rather than a single daily forecast; always check the short-range outlook from Georgia’s National Environment Agency a few days before travelling, since mountain weather changes quickly.

| Region | Typical daytime high | Typical overnight low | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tbilisi | 10–16°C | 0–5°C | Changeable, frequent rain showers, occasional dry warm spells |
| Kakheti ([Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/), [Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/)) | 9–15°C | −1–4°C | Vineyards bare until April, almond blossom from mid-month |
| [Imereti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/imereti/) ([Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/)) | 11–17°C | 2–6°C | Wetter than Tbilisi, early greenery in gardens |
| Batumi and the [Adjara](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ajara/) coast | 11–16°C | 5–9°C | Mildest region, frequent rain, sea still cold |
| Gudauri and Kazbegi | -2–4°C | −10–−3°C | Still winter, snow cover intact at altitude |
| [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) and Svaneti | -3–3°C | −12–−4°C | Heavy snowpack, valley towns accessible, high villages depend on ploughing |
| Bakuriani | -1–5°C | −9–−2°C | Reliable late-season skiing on a shorter, gentler circuit |

### Which passes and roads are open

Most of Georgia’s low-altitude road network functions normally in March. The Rikoti Pass tunnel linking east and west stays open year-round, and the Georgian Military Highway between Tbilisi and [Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/) (Kazbegi) via the Jvari Pass is generally passable, though the Gudauri to Kazbegi stretch can close for a few hours after heavy snow or avalanche control work. Several higher passes remain shut through March and sometimes into May or June:

- Abano Pass to Tusheti: closed, normally reopens in June, making Tusheti unreachable by road until late spring

- Datvisjvari (Zagari) Pass between Svaneti and [Lechkhumi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/racha-lechkhumi/): closed

- [Goderdzi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/goderdzi/) Pass linking Adjara’s highlands to [Samtskhe-Javakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/samtskhe-javakheti/): typically closed or snowbound, check locally before planning the Adjara Highlands by 4×4 — Beshumi, Goderdzi and the Alpine Villages route in this window

- Zekari Pass (Akhaltsikhe to Adjara): closed

- Mamison Pass in Racha: closed

For same-week confirmation, Georgia’s Roads Department publishes live pass and highway status, and our own road-status page summarises it in plain English before you book a transfer or a self-drive route.

### 3 and 8 March: two holidays, different moods

Georgia observes 3 March, a date some Georgians still associate with the Soviet-era women’s and mothers’ holiday tradition, and 8 March, International Women’s Day, which is a statutory public holiday with shops, banks and most offices closed or working reduced hours. Together they function as a long weekend for many Georgian families, with flowers, restaurant tables and domestic travel in demand, particularly to Kakheti, Borjomi and Batumi. Museums, churches and most tourist services continue operating, but it is worth booking restaurant tables and private guides a little earlier than usual around these dates, and confirming opening hours for specific state offices or banks you may need. Official holiday lists and any changes are published through Georgia’s government channels; see the current list summarised by [Georgia Today’s public holidays coverage](https://georgiatoday.ge/tag/public-holidays) and verify against the latest government notice before finalising fixed appointments.

### Almond blossom in Kakheti

Kakheti’s almond trees, planted along field edges and village approaches rather than in single dedicated orchards, usually begin flowering from around the third week of March, slightly earlier in warm years and into early April in cold ones. The bloom is scattered rather than concentrated in one named park, so the best approach is a slow drive through the Alazani Valley between Telavi, Kvareli and Sighnaghi, stopping wherever roadside trees are in flower. This coincides with the vineyards still being bare after winter pruning, which makes for a photogenic contrast between dark vine rows and white or pale pink blossom against the Caucasus backdrop. A day trip such as Kakheti Classic — Sighnaghi, Bodbe and Two Cellars in a Day or Telavi & Kakheti Wine Region — Monasteries and Cellars both pass through blossom country, and a private driver can divert for roadside stops that a fixed bus tour cannot.

### Spring in the lowlands, winter still in the mountains

The defining feature of March in Georgia is that two seasons run at once. In Tbilisi, Kutaisi and along the Black Sea coast, parks turn green, markets fill with early greens and the first spring vegetables, and outdoor walking tours become comfortable again after the short winter days. In Kakheti the same applies, with monastery courtyards and vineyard lanes pleasant to walk by midday even if mornings are cold. Meanwhile Gudauri, two and a half hours from Tbilisi, and Bakuriani, roughly the same from either Tbilisi or Borjomi, usually keep their main lifts running, and in a good snow year Svaneti’s Tetnuldi and Hatsvali resorts above Mestia do too. This means a single trip can combine a morning on snow with an afternoon among almond blossom a few hours’ drive away, something few other European countries offer in March.

### Ski tail: what is realistically still open

Lift operating dates depend on snowfall and are set resort by resort rather than by a fixed calendar, so always check current status with the resort before travelling. As a general pattern for recent seasons, Gudauri’s upper slopes and Bakuriani’s gentler runs have tended to stay open into late March, with Gudauri occasionally running into the first half of April in strong snow years, while Svaneti’s higher lifts can run a little later still because of greater base elevation. Confirm current lift and piste status directly with Gudauri’s official resort information and with Bakuriani’s operator pages via Georgia’s Mountain Resorts Development Company before booking non-refundable lift passes. Packages built for this window include Gudauri Ski Package — 5 Nights with Transfers and Ski Pass, Bakuriani Family Winter — 4 Nights of Gentle Slopes and Sledging, and Svaneti Ski — Tetnuldi and Hatsvali, 5 Nights in Mestia, all of which can be timed to catch the tail end of the season rather than its peak crowds.

### Shoulder-season prices

March sits in the gap between winter’s New Year surcharge and the Easter to May bridge-holiday peak, and private-tour and transfer pricing across Georgia reflects that. The table below, drawn from our own published rates, shows how per-person cost falls sharply once you are travelling with even one companion, which matters more in shoulder season when group tours may run with fewer passengers.

| Tour | Solo | Two travellers (each) | Four to six (each) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Kakheti Wine Country — Day Trip | €344 | €215 | €183 |
| Georgian Military Highway — Ananuri, Gudauri and Gergeti in a Day | €336 | €210 | €179 |
| Winter Kakheti — Cellars by the Fire, 2 Days | €784 | €490 | €417 |
| Georgia in Winter — Gudauri Skiing, Tbilisi & Kakheti (6 Days) | €2,544 | €1,590 | €1,352 |

For independent travel, a Car with Driver by the Day — Sedan, Minivan or 4×4, Your Own Route or a Licensed Private Guide by the Day both give flexibility to chase good weather, switching a mountain morning for a Kakheti afternoon if a pass closes unexpectedly. Current tour and service pricing, including currency conversion guidance, is kept on our price table.
