Early April in Georgia means [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) parks turning pink and white with blossom, the [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) reopening for day trips to Kazbegi, and [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) still buried under several metres of snow. Orthodox Easter falls on 12 April 2026, and it remains the single best lens through which to plan the month: book around it for the atmosphere of Holy Week in [Mtskheta](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mtskheta/) and Tbilisi, or deliberately avoid the week itself if you want empty churches and cheaper rooms.

For most travellers, April works best as a two-speed trip: lowland Georgia (Tbilisi, Mtskheta, [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/), the first stretch of the Military Highway to Gudauri and [Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/)) is genuinely spring, while the high Caucasus (Svaneti, Tusheti, the passes above Gudauri) is still deep winter and should be treated that way when planning routes, clothing and expectations.

### Orthodox Easter 2026: the date and what you will actually see

The Georgian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar for the movable feasts, which puts Easter (Aghdgoma) on 12 April 2026, a week after the Western date. Confirm the exact date and the Holy Week service schedule close to travel on the Patriarchate’s own site, since minor adjustments to parish timetables are announced only a few weeks ahead.

- **Holy Thursday and Good Friday** bring candlelit processions and the reading of the Twelve Gospels in major churches, including [Sioni](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sioni/) Cathedral in Tbilisi and Svetitskhoveli in Mtskheta, part of the [Historical Monuments of Mtskheta](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/708) World Heritage site.

- **Holy Saturday night into Sunday morning** is the main event: the midnight liturgy, the exchange of “Kriste Aghsdga” (Christ is risen), and families walking home through the Old Town carrying lit candles toward dawn.

- **Easter Sunday lunch** is a family supra with red-dyed eggs, Easter bread (paska), and roast lamb or pork; many restaurants close for the afternoon, so if you want a guided version of the table rather than just watching it, our Supra Evening — a Georgian Feast with a Tamada and Polyphonic Song fills that gap on other days of the stay.

Practically, expect churches to be full and photography to be discouraged during services; accommodation in Mtskheta, [Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/) and central Tbilisi books up for the Thursday-to-Monday window, so reserve rooms and any guided walk, such as the Old Tbilisi Walking Tour, well in advance if your dates overlap Easter week.

### Tbilisi in bloom

April is the most forgiving month for walking Tbilisi. Daytime highs typically run from the low teens in early April to the low twenties by the end of the month, with cool mornings and a real chance of rain showers, so layering matters more than heavy clothing. Blossom peaks roughly in the first half of the month in Vake Park, along Rustaveli Avenue’s side streets, and in the Botanical Garden below Narikala, where magnolia, cherry and Judas trees flower against the old city walls.

- Vake Park and the National Botanical Garden for blossom and tulip beds.

- [Mtatsminda Park](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mtatsminda-park/) and the funicular for panoramic views once the haze of early spring clears, covered on our Tbilisi Hills — Mtatsminda Pantheon, Funicular and Vake Park walk.

- [Rike Park](https://gtour.ge/georgia/rike-park/) and the riverside promenade, pleasant in the lengthening evening light.

Check same-week conditions with the National Environment Agency’s forecasts before packing, since April temperatures swing by ten degrees or more within a few days.

### The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi

By April the lowland half of the Georgian Military Highway, from Tbilisi through [Ananuri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ananuri/) and [Pasanauri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/pasanauri/), is clear and green. The upper section around the Jvari Pass and Gudauri still holds snow on the verges well into the month, and sudden spring snowfall or fog can close the Russian border crossing at Larsi or force temporary closures of the pass itself. Always check same-day status before setting out, as conditions change faster than forecasts suggest.

- Road and pass status: check the Georgian Road Department’s live updates at [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge/en), or our own simplified summary on the GTour road-status page.

- Gergeti Trinity Church above Stepantsminda is usually reachable by 4×4 in April, but the walking trail can still have icy patches in shaded sections; a guided day such as our Georgian Military Highway — Ananuri, Gudauri and Gergeti in a Day builds in the right vehicle and timing.

- For a longer stay with a proper mountain introduction, Kazbegi — 2-Day Mountain Journey or the [Juta](https://gtour.ge/georgia/juta/), Sno and Gergeti — Kazbegi Off the Main Road day trip both work well once the road is confirmed clear.

### Svaneti: still winter, not yet spring

Svaneti sits far higher and further from the coast than Kazbegi, and in April it is still a winter landscape: [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/) and [Ushguli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ushguli/) routinely hold a metre or more of snow into the second half of the month, and the Zagar Pass connecting Svaneti to [Racha](https://gtour.ge/georgia/racha-lechkhumi/) typically does not open until late May or June. Treat April Svaneti as a ski-touring or snowshoe-and-tower-photography trip, not a hiking trip.

- The Mestia–Ushguli road itself is kept open by snowploughs in most winters, but delays and short closures after fresh snow are routine; always confirm departure-day conditions locally or through a 4×4 operator before committing to a fixed schedule.

- Ski season in Svaneti often extends into April at Tetnuldi and Hatsvali, covered by our Svaneti Ski — Tetnuldi and Hatsvali, 5 Nights in Mestia package.

- Photographers who want snow-capped towers without summer crowds can look at the Svaneti Photography Tour — Towers, Glaciers and Ushguli Light, 5 Days, scheduled with flexibility for spring weather.

- Classic warm-season treks such as Mestia to Ushguli Trek — 4 Days on the Svaneti Trail are a June-to-September proposition, not an April one.

### April weather at a glance

| Location | Typical daytime range | What to expect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tbilisi | 12–22°C | Blossom, intermittent rain, cool evenings |
| Kazbegi / Stepantsminda | 2–12°C | Green lower valley, snow above the tree line, wind on the pass |
| Mestia (Svaneti) | minus 2 to 8°C | Deep snow cover, active avalanche risk off marked routes |
| Batumi (Black Sea coast) | 13–18°C | Frequent rain, sea still cold for swimming |

These are typical ranges, not a forecast; the National Environment Agency publishes current and short-range forecasts for Georgian regions, and conditions in any given week can diverge from the averages above.

### What to pack

- Layers: a light base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell cover most of what April throws at you between Tbilisi and the mountains.

- Sturdy, waterproof walking shoes for cobbled Old Tbilisi streets after rain and for any short walk near Gergeti or Svaneti snow edges.

- Sunglasses and sun protection for mountain days, since UV at altitude on snow is stronger than the cool air suggests.

- A compact umbrella or packable rain jacket for Tbilisi and Batumi showers.

- If visiting during Holy Week, modest dress (covered shoulders, long trousers or skirts) for church visits, and a headscarf for women entering Orthodox churches.

### Prices and planning for April

April sits in the shoulder season: Tbilisi hotel rates are generally below the May-to-September peak, and mountain guesthouses in Kazbegi and Svaneti are quieter than summer, though some close briefly between ski season and the warm-season opening, so confirm availability directly. All prices below are per person in EUR and come from our own current rate card.

### Practical summary

- Orthodox Easter 2026 falls on 12 April; confirm the exact service schedule nearer the date on patriarchate.ge.

- Tbilisi is in genuine spring by April: pack layers and a rain jacket, visit Vake Park and the Botanical Garden for blossom.

- The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi is usually open to Gudauri and Stepantsminda, but always check same-day road status before departure.

- Svaneti is still winter in April; plan ski, snowshoe or photography trips, not warm-season treks, and expect the Zagar Pass to stay closed.

- Book Easter-week rooms and tours in Tbilisi and Mtskheta early, since demand peaks around 9 to 13 April.

- Check current weather with the National Environment Agency before fixing a mountain itinerary.
