Few African predators carry as unfair a reputation as the spotted hyena, long dismissed as a scavenger lurking at the edges of other animals’ kills. Research in the Masai Mara tells a different story: hyenas kill between 70 and 95 percent of the large prey they eat, making them one of the savannah’s true apex predators rather than opportunistic leftover-feeders.

Their society is built around females, who outsize males and dominate every aspect of clan life, from food access to territory. Clans can number from a handful of animals to more than 80, ranging across territories of 40 to 1,000 square kilometres, with social rank passed down from mother to cub. The much-mocked hyena ‘laugh’ is not laughter at all but a submissive call made under stress, part of a vocal repertoire that also includes long-distance whoops, excited giggles and distress calls — sounds so distinctive that individuals and their rank can be recognised from more than five kilometres away.

Ecologically, hyenas are essential recyclers: their powerful stomach acid breaks down bone and hide that other predators leave behind, returning nutrients to the soil. Their rivalry with lions is equally fierce, with more than half of recorded lion-hyena encounters in some Mara study areas involving one species stealing a kill from the other.

Travellers combining a Caucasus itinerary with an East African add-on will find the Masai Mara, reachable via Nairobi, among the most reliable places worldwide to observe spotted hyena clans, particularly during dawn and dusk game drives.
