The road from [Mtskheta](/georgia/mtskheta/) to Stepantsminda is one of the most travelled stretches in Georgia, climbing from the ancient capital through Pasanauri and Gudauri before reaching the foot of Mount Kazbek. It passes through what locals call khinkali country, a corridor of roadside and town restaurants that has fed pilgrims, traders and travellers for generations.
