For a first visit, go to [Tbilisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tbilisi/) and [Mtskheta](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mtskheta/), then Kazbegi on the [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/), then [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/) for wine, then [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) for the high mountains, then [Kutaisi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kutaisi/) with its canyons and caves, then [Batumi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/batumi/) and the [Adjara](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ajara/) highlands, then [Samtskhe-Javakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/samtskhe-javakheti/) for Vardzia and [Borjomi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/borjomi/), then [Gori](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gori/) and Uplistsikhe, and finally David Gareji. That is ten places in roughly descending order of how much they change your understanding of the country, not ten places to force into one itinerary. A realistic first trip of seven to ten days covers the top five comfortably; the full ten needs twelve to fourteen days, which is roughly the shape of our Georgia in 10 Days — Tbilisi to Svaneti to the Sea and The Grand Tour of Georgia in 14 Days.

The honest skips are not bad places, they are wrong for a first, short visit: Tusheti and Shatili-Mutso as rushed day trips, Borjomi’s town park as a centrepiece rather than a stop, the “magnetic sand” beaches of [Ureki](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ureki/), and Svaneti attempted as a long day trip from Kutaisi. Each rewards travellers with more time and the right vehicle; each punishes a tight schedule with a long drive and a short look.

### The ten places that matter, ranked

| Rank | Place | Why it matters | Drive time | Days needed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Tbilisi | Old Town, sulphur baths, markets, the only city with direct flights and a full range of hotels | — | 2-3 |
| 2 | Mtskheta | Jvari and Svetitskhoveli, both part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site | 25 minutes from Tbilisi | Half day |
| 3 | Kazbegi ([Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/)) | Gergeti Trinity Church below Mount Kazbek, the Georgian Military Highway | 3 hours from Tbilisi | 1-2 |
| 4 | Kakheti | [Sighnaghi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/sighnaghi/), [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/), Alaverdi, the country’s main wine region | 1.5-2 hours from Tbilisi | 2 |
| 5 | Svaneti (Mestia, [Ushguli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ushguli/)) | Stone defence towers, glaciers, a UNESCO-listed landscape | 8-9 hours from Tbilisi, 4.5 from Kutaisi | 3-4 |
| 6 | Kutaisi region | Gelati Monastery, Martvili and Okatse canyons, Prometheus Cave | 4 hours from Tbilisi, or fly direct | 2 |
| 7 | Batumi and Adjara highlands | Black Sea city, Goderdzi Pass villages, subtropical botanical garden | 6 hours from Tbilisi, or fly direct | 2-3 |
| 8 | Samtskhe-Javakheti | Vardzia cave monastery, Rabati fortress, Borjomi spa town | 3 hours from Tbilisi | 2-3 |
| 9 | Gori and Uplistsikhe | Bronze Age to medieval cave city carved into rock | 1-1.5 hours from Tbilisi | Half day to a day |
| 10 | David Gareji | Desert monastery on the Azerbaijani border, rainbow hills | 1.5-2 hours, partly unpaved | Half day to a day |

### Tbilisi and the day trips within reach

Tbilisi earns first place because almost every onward route starts there: the Tbilisi International Airport handles the country’s main international connections, and the city itself holds enough for two full days without repeating a street. The Old Tbilisi Walking Tour — 3 Hours with a Licensed Guide covers the layout quickly; the Sulphur Baths Experience — Abanotubani History and a Private Bath Room and a wander through Dry Bridge and Dezerter Bazaar fill a third day well. Mtskheta, the former capital 25 minutes north, is small enough to add to a Tbilisi day without sacrificing anything, which is why we built Tbilisi & Mtskheta — The Essential First Day around exactly that pairing. The Historical Monuments of Mtskheta are one of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, alongside Upper Svaneti and the Gelati Monastery, and the inscription record itself is worth a glance before you go.

### The mountains: Kazbegi and Svaneti, and how to choose

These two answer different questions. Kazbegi is close, fast, and dramatic in a single day: three hours up the Georgian Military Highway through Ananuri and Gudauri to Gergeti Trinity Church, with the option to add Juta or the Gergeti Glacier if you have a second day, as in our Kazbegi — 2-Day Mountain Journey. Svaneti asks for more and gives more back: a full day of driving each way (shorter from Kutaisi than from Tbilisi), stone towers in Mestia, and the UNESCO-listed village of Ushguli at the end of a rough road that is genuinely closed by snow for parts of the year. Mestia & Ushguli — 3 Days in Svaneti is the minimum sensible version; the Mestia to Ushguli Trek — 4 Days on the Svaneti Trail is better if you want to walk rather than drive between villages. If your trip is under a week, pick one. Kazbegi fits a short trip; Svaneti deserves its own trip or a slot in a ten-to-fourteen-day tour. Mountain road status changes with weather and season, and it is worth checking the official road authority before you commit a whole day to either route.

### Wine, canyons and the south

Kakheti is Georgia’s wine country in the way Bordeaux is France’s: not the only region, but the one with the deepest infrastructure for visitors, including cellar tours built around the qvevri clay-jar method recognised internationally as part of Georgia’s intangible heritage. Kakheti Classic — Sighnaghi, Bodbe and Two Cellars in a Day covers the essentials; Telavi, Alaverdi and Tsinandali — Northern Kakheti in a Day goes further north for monasteries and the Tsinandali estate. The Kutaisi side of the country is underrated for its density of short, striking stops: Gelati’s frescoes, Bagrati Cathedral’s hilltop ruin, and the Martvili and Okatse canyons, all reachable on the Martvili & Okatse Canyons + Prometheus Cave — Day Trip from Kutaisi or as a stop on a longer western loop. Kutaisi International Airport now takes a meaningful share of the country’s low-cost arrivals, which makes starting a western Georgia trip from Kutaisi rather than Tbilisi a reasonable plan worth checking against current flight schedules. Further south, Vardzia’s cave monastery and Rabati’s restored fortress pair well with a night in Borjomi, inside the Borjomi-Kharagauli protected area managed by the national Agency of Protected Areas, as in our The South in 3 Days — Borjomi, Vardzia, Rabati and Abastumani.

### Batumi, the coast and the Adjara highlands

Batumi divides opinion among repeat visitors more than any other entry on this list, and that is precisely why it matters for a first trip: it is the clearest contrast to everything else in the country, a subtropical Black Sea city with a Soviet-era botanical garden, a restored Old Town, and direct flights through Batumi International Airport. What makes Batumi worth the detour rather than a missable add-on is the hinterland behind it. The Goderdzi Pass road climbs from sea level into alpine meadows within two hours, covered in our Adjara Highlands — Khulo, the Goderdzi Pass and the Green Lake day trip or the overnight Adjara Highlands by 4×4 — Beshumi, Goderdzi and the Alpine Villages, 2 Days. Skip Batumi only if your whole trip is under five days and mountains or wine already fill the schedule; otherwise it is the best single contrast you can add.

### The five places you can skip on a first trip

- **Tusheti as a rushed add-on.** The Abano Pass road is open roughly June to September, is unpaved for most of its length, and closes without much warning in bad weather; check status before planning anything, and treat Tusheti as a dedicated trip such as Tusheti — Georgia’s Last Wild Frontier (4 Days), not a two-day bolt from Tbilisi.

- **Shatili and Mutso in a single day.** It can be done, and we run Shatili and Mutso — Khevsureti in One Long Day (4×4) for travellers who have only one day free, but fourteen hours in a 4×4 on mountain roads is a demanding way to see two villages. An overnight, or combining it with Tusheti, suits most people better.

- **Borjomi’s town park as the main event.** The mineral-water park draws long queues for the bottling fountain in high season and the park itself is a pleasant but modest city green space; Borjomi earns its place as a stop on the way to Vardzia and Bakuriani, not as a destination on its own.

- **Ureki and the “magnetic sand” resorts.** Claims about the black sand’s therapeutic properties are not supported by the kind of clinical evidence a public health reader should expect, the town is crowded through August, and there is little else to see; spend beach time instead in Batumi, Gonio or Sarpi, where the coastline and the history are both stronger.

- **Svaneti as a long day trip from Kutaisi.** The road alone eats most of a day each way even with a good driver, and arriving at dusk to leave again at dawn means seeing almost nothing. Mestia needs at least two nights and Ushguli a third day; anything shorter is better spent elsewhere.

### How many days you actually need

Seven days covers Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kazbegi and Kakheti without rushing, close to the shape of our Georgia Classic in 7 Days — Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Kakheti and Mtskheta. Ten days adds either Svaneti or the west, as in Georgia in 10 Days — Tbilisi to Svaneti to the Sea. Fourteen days is the point at which all ten places on this list fit comfortably, which is the logic behind The Grand Tour of Georgia in 14 Days — Every Region, Mountains to Sea. Anything under five days should drop the mountains entirely and focus on Tbilisi, Mtskheta and Kakheti, where drive times are short and the return to the airport is never in doubt.

### Practical summary

- Fly into Tbilisi International Airport, Kutaisi International Airport, or Batumi International Airport depending on which end of the country you start from.

- Seven days: Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kazbegi, Kakheti. Ten to fourteen days: add Svaneti, Kutaisi’s canyons, Batumi, and the south.

- Book a 4×4 and a certified driver for Tusheti, Khevsureti, Ushguli and any winter mountain pass.

- Check georoad.gov.ge before committing a day to the Georgian Military Highway, the Abano Pass, or the Zagar Pass.

- Skip a rushed Tusheti or Shatili day trip, Borjomi’s park as a main event, Ureki’s beaches, and a Kutaisi-to-Svaneti day trip; give each the time it needs instead.

- Confirm current entry requirements and any rule changes on gov.ge or mfa.gov.ge before you travel.
