The best hikes in Georgia for most visitors are a short list that covers every ability: Gergeti Trinity Church and Chalaadi Glacier for an easy half-day near Kazbegi and [Mestia](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mestia/), Koruldi Lakes and the [Juta](https://gtour.ge/georgia/juta/)–Chaukhi Pass for a demanding day out, and the Mestia–[Ushguli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/ushguli/), Omalo–[Shatili](https://gtour.ge/georgia/shatili/) and Black Rock Lake routes for multi-day treks that need planning, fitness and often a guide. Season matters as much as distance: the high routes (Chaukhi, Koruldi, Atsunta Pass, Black Rock Lake) are typically walkable only from mid-June to late September, while [Martvili](https://gtour.ge/georgia/martvili/), Birtvisi and [Tabatskuri](https://gtour.ge/georgia/tabatskuri/) can be done most of the year with care.

Below are 15 day walks and treks, grouped by difficulty, with distance, ascent, season and whether a guide is sensible rather than essential. Trail conditions, snow cover and border-zone rules change year to year, so always check the current status with the Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia and the road authority before you commit, links are given in each section.

### How to choose: difficulty, season and permits

Georgia’s trekking grades roughly into three bands. Easy walks are under 10 km with under 300 m of ascent and need no special gear. Moderate hikes run 10 to 18 km with 500 to 900 m of ascent, a full day with proper boots and layers. Hard routes exceed 1,000 m of ascent, cross exposed ridges or glacial moraine, and are best done with a licensed or certified mountain guide, particularly above 2,800 m or near glaciers such as Kazbek’s. Protected areas including [Lagodekhi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/lagodekhi/) and the border zones around Tusheti and Khevsureti have entry and permit rules that are updated by the Agency of Protected Areas, check current conditions before travel at [apa.gov.ge](https://apa.gov.ge). Road and pass closures on the [Georgian Military Highway](https://gtour.ge/georgia/gudauri/) are published by the road agency, see [georoad.gov.ge](https://georoad.gov.ge).

### Easy day walks

- **Gergeti Trinity Church, Kazbegi** — about 6 km round trip from [Stepantsminda](https://gtour.ge/georgia/stepantsminda/), 400 m ascent, 2 to 3 hours, walkable May to October and with care in winter on a cleared track. No guide needed on the church path itself, though GTour runs a private day trip, Kazbegi — Gergeti Trinity Church in a Day.

- **Chalaadi Glacier, Mestia** — roughly 10 km round trip from Mestia with minimal ascent, 3 to 4 hours, best June to September when the river crossing is manageable. Straightforward on foot, included in the [Svaneti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/svaneti/) Day Hikes — Koruldi, Chalaadi and Hatsvali itinerary.

- **Martvili Monastery and Canyon** — a short walk of under 3 km around the monastery grounds and canyon rim, open year round, no guide required, best combined with the boat section of the canyon which runs April to October. See Martvili Monastery, Salkhino and an Ojaleshi Cellar.

- **Tabatskuri Lake, Trialeti** — an easy 5 to 8 km shoreline walk at around 1,990 m, best June to September since the plateau road is unreliable in snow, no guide necessary but a 4×4 or local driver is useful for access; arrange with a Car with Driver by the Day.

### Moderate day hikes

- **Juta to Sno Valley loop, Khevsureti** — around 12 km, 500 to 600 m ascent, a full day, best July to September. Doable independently with a map, or as part of the Juta, Sno and Gergeti day trip.

- **Shatili to [Mutso](https://gtour.ge/georgia/mutso/)** — a 3 to 4 hour walk between the two towers, around 8 km one way if you arrange a pick-up, best late June to September since the Khevsureti road itself is seasonal. A 4×4 and driver are strongly advised, see Shatili and Mutso — Khevsureti in One Long Day.

- **Lagodekhi to Ninoswimi Lake** — about 14 km round trip, 600 m ascent, 5 to 6 hours, open May to October, within Lagodekhi Protected Areas where entry is registered with rangers, check current trail status at [apa.gov.ge](https://apa.gov.ge). Combine with the Eastern [Kakheti](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kakheti/) day trip from [Telavi](https://gtour.ge/georgia/telavi/) or [Kvareli](https://gtour.ge/georgia/kvareli/).

- **Birtvisi Fortress** — roughly 7 km round trip through the canyon to the ruined fortress, 400 m ascent, 3 to 4 hours, open most of the year but can be muddy in winter. No technical skill needed, included in Birtvisi Fortress Hike and Dashbashi Canyon.

### Hard day hikes and summit approaches

- **Gergeti Glacier and Kazbek Meteo Station** — around 18 km round trip from Stepantsminda, 1,300 m ascent to roughly 3,700 m, a long day or better split over two, July to September only, with snow and crevasse risk on the glacier itself. A certified mountain guide is strongly recommended above the meteo station; GTour’s Gergeti Glacier and Kazbek Base Camp runs as a 2-day itinerary from Stepantsminda.

- **Koruldi Lakes, Mestia** — about 14 km round trip, 1,100 m ascent to roughly 2,700 m, a demanding full day, late June to September since snow lingers on the upper slopes. Part of the Svaneti Day Hikes itinerary with local transport to the trailhead.

- **Juta to Chaukhi Pass** — around 16 km round trip, 1,000 m ascent to about 2,850 m, mid-July to mid-September only, exposed scree near the pass. Best attempted with a guide; see Juta, Chaukhi Pass and Roshka — 3 Days in Khevsureti, which spreads the route over three days rather than one long push.

### Multi-day treks

These three routes are the serious commitments on this list, each needing a realistic fitness level, weatherproof gear and, for two of them, a border-zone permit check.

- **Mestia to Ushguli** — around 45 to 55 km over 3 to 4 days depending on route choice, cumulative ascent over 2,000 m, passing Svan villages below Shkhara and Ushba. Mid-June to late September, with river levels and the odd closed bridge the main seasonal risk. GTour runs this as the Mestia to Ushguli Trek over four days, or as a shorter 3-day tour with vehicle support, Mestia and Ushguli.

- **Omalo to Shatili over the Atsunta Pass** — roughly 45 km over 4 to 6 days, crossing at nearly 3,400 m, the hardest trek on this list and firmly a guided undertaking given the remoteness and the Tusheti–Khevsureti border zone. Snow can block the pass outside late July to early September. See Tusheti to Khevsureti — Omalo to Shatili over the Atsunta Pass, 6 Days, and confirm current protected-area access at [apa.gov.ge](https://apa.gov.ge).

- **Lagodekhi — Black Rock Lake** — about 42 km round trip over 3 days, 2,000 m cumulative ascent to the lake at roughly 2,700 m near the Dagestan border, June to September only, inside Lagodekhi Protected Areas with ranger registration required. GTour’s Lagodekhi — Black Rock Lake Trek, 3 Days includes the permits and camping logistics.

### Safety, permits and border zones

Tusheti, parts of Khevsureti and the Lagodekhi frontier with Dagestan sit inside Georgia’s border zone, where movement is monitored and some routes require advance registration with the Agency of Protected Areas, current rules are posted at [apa.gov.ge](https://apa.gov.ge). Weather above 2,500 m changes quickly even in August, carry a waterproof layer and tell someone your return time. Mobile signal is patchy or absent on Chaukhi, the Atsunta Pass and much of Tusheti, which is why GTour pairs these routes with a licensed guide or a 4×4 driver rather than leaving them fully self-guided; see Licensed Private Guide by the Day for rates. For anyone with asthma, heart conditions or recent injury, a doctor’s advice before attempting anything above 2,800 m, including Kazbek’s glacier approach, is sound practice rather than caution for its own sake.
