Kakheti, spread east of Tbilisi across the valleys of the Alazani and Iori rivers, is where qvevri winemaking was born and where the vine still shapes daily life. Travellers heading to Kakheti on a day trip or a longer Kakheti tour will find everything from centuries-old family cellars to newer estates built around historic villages like Kardenakhi and Gremi, all within reach of Telavi, Gurjaani and Sagarejo.
This list was compiled by the GTour desk from the national register of licensed wine venues in Kakheti. Entries were selected for location, established presence and what they offer a visitor in practical terms — not ranked, rated or paid for. The order below is for reading convenience only.
1. Ancestral Wine Cellar
Ancestral Wine Cellar is a family-run operation based in Kardenakhi village, on Beroshvili street at Gulashvili, founded in 2015. It suits visitors keen on a more intimate, village-set cellar visit rather than a large commercial estate. The winery maintains its own website for those planning ahead.
2. Brothers Khutsishvili Wine Cellar
Located in the village of Kisiskhevi near Telavi, this is a family cellar bearing the Khutsishvili name. It is a good stop for travellers already exploring the Telavi area who want to add a working village cellar to their route.
3. Chateau Gremisio
Chateau Gremisio sits within 600 metres of the Gremi Citadel, one of Kakheti’s key historical landmarks, making it a convenient pairing for visitors combining wine with sightseeing. It is listed in the national tourism register, with contact details and location verified for travellers planning a stop near Gremi.
4. Gevelli
Gevelli winery is set near the ancient city of Telavi, in the village of Vardisubani. It operates commercially in the wine market and offers visitors a chance to see a working winery close to one of Kakheti’s main towns.
5. Iora Winery
Iora combines a winery and a hotel in the village of Ninotsminda, within Sagarejo Municipality. This makes it a practical choice for travellers who want to stay overnight near the vineyards rather than visit on a day trip alone.
6. Jobava Winery
Jobava Winery is based in the village of Shilda and describes itself as welcoming tourists and guests for a wine and culinary experience. It suits visitors interested in pairing a cellar visit with local food traditions.
7. Kardanakhi Estate
Kardanakhi Estate is located in Kardenakhi village, a settlement the winery itself describes as unique within Georgia. Visitors interested in the specific terroir and history of this particular village will find this estate a natural stop alongside Ancestral Wine Cellar, also based there.
8. Kerovani Winery
Kerovani is a family-owned winery on David Agmashenebeli Street producing natural wines from its own organic vineyards. It appeals to travellers specifically interested in organic and natural winemaking methods during their Kakheti visit.
9. Khaos Marani
Founded in 2013 and located in Gurjaani, Khaos Marani works with Saperavi and Rkatsiteli, two of Kakheti’s defining grape varieties. It is based at Kotekhi Farm, offering visitors a chance to see these signature grapes handled by a relatively young producer.
10. Kvareli Wine Cave
Set in the Meurneoba district, Kvareli Wine Cave offers travellers a distinctive setting for tasting premium Georgian wine, with the cave environment itself part of the draw. It is a good option for visitors wanting something beyond a standard cellar or courtyard tasting, especially those already near Kvareli town.
How to use this list
Use this list as a starting point for building a Kakheti itinerary around location and interest rather than as a verdict on quality: pair wineries near Gremi, Kvareli or Telavi with sightseeing already on the route, consider Iora Winery if an overnight stay near the vineyards is wanted, and check each winery’s own website before visiting, since opening arrangements at family cellars can vary by season and by request.
